Korea National Oil Corp. (KNOC) and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) agreed to mutual exchanges and cooperation in energy security, carbon capture storage (CCS) and hydrogen/ammonia sectors, and will work together to materialize collaboration projects after consulting with their governments, KNOC said on Dec. 8.
KNOC President Kim Dong-sub, concurrently chairman of the Energy & Mineral Resources Development Association of Korea (EMRD), visited JOGMEC headquarters in Japan and met with CEO Takahara Ichiro on Dec. 5.
They shared ways of promoting cooperation between the two companies to cope with climate change and energy security.
The latest visit was designed to promote mutual cooperation with JOGMEC to become an international leader in the hydrogen/ammonia sector, the future clean energy, at Energy Asia 2023, which took place in Malaysia in June.
At that time, KNOC President Kim said, ¡°Korea and Japan need to cooperate in the energy sector since they are required to promote international cooperation to cope with resources energy and energy transition against global pending issues, such as the breakout of wars and climate change.¡±
In the latest meeting, KNOC President Kim said, ¡°If Korea and Japan, neighboring countries by sea, maximize synergetic effects through the cooperation in the development of CCS and maritime resources, at a time when energy security emerges significantly amid the recent tense international situation, they are expected to spearhead greater roles to build the ecosystem of the global hydrogen industry.¡±
President Kim proposed that KNOC regularize meetings in the hydrogen/ammonia business area.
JOGMEC CEO Takahara said, ¡°I expect both institutions to support both governments¡¯ energy policies and materialize cooperative matters through working-level consultations in the future.¡±
Both companies agreed to hold related meetings in Korea in early 2024.
In June 2007, KNOC struck a strategic alliance agreement with JOGMEC with the goal of ramping up strategic alliance between the two countries, petroleum stockpile technology analysis and cooperation.
They have shared experiences on issues, such as stockpile experiences and developments in implementing petroleum stockpile policies through annual regular meetings following the deal.

Korea National Oil Corp. has inaugurated an ¡°oil crisis response situation room team¡± to brace for a petroleum crisis in the wake of the armed conflicts between Israel and Hamas and conducted readiness toward the release of petroleum stockpile reserves at petroleum reserve centers in Korea and on-site inspection into facility safety.
KNOC established an oil crisis response situation room team to brace for rapidly changing developments amid rising geopolitical conflicts in the Middle Eastern region, caused by invasion of Israel by Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist group.
