Korea National Railway (KR) said on Nov. 20 that KR commissioned feasibility studies on the second phase (Sintanjin-Jochiwon) section and the third-phase (Ganggyeong-Gaeryong) section of the Chungcheon area metropolitan railway network, as well as the second-phase (Gimcheon-Gumi) section of the Daegu metropolitan area railway network.
The metropolitan area railway network projects are to be implemented in accordance with the 4th national railway network construction plan, which is designed to expand transportation infrastructure in the Chungcheong and Daegu areas and spur regional balanced development.
The feasibility study is the first step before commissioning of a further study, which is designed to consider proposed railway routes, demand, economical survey and development of project implementation rationale.
The feasibility study will last for 12 months from its starting date.
The proposed second — and third-phase project of the Chungcheong area metropolitan railway network will be designed to connect four cities and provinces — Daejeon, Sejong, Chungcheongnam-do and Chujngcheongbuk-do by extending a 22.6 km-long section between Sintanjin and Jochiwon to the first-phase section (Gaeryong-Sintanjin) of the metropolitan area network whose dedication is slated for the end of this year and improving the existing Ganggyeong-Gaeryong section, a 40.7 km-portion of the Honam Line.
The routes of the second phase (Sintanjin-Jochiwon) section and the third-phase (Ganggyeong-Gaeryong) section of the Chungcheon area metropolitan railway network, as well as the second-phase (Gimcheon-Gumi) section of the Daegu metropolitan area railway network.
The proposed second-phase project of the Daegu metropolitan area railway network will be designed to ease public transportation inconvenience in the Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do area by extending the first phase section between Gumi and Gyeongsan of the Daegu metropolitan area railway network, which gets under construction, and improving the 22.9 km-long section between Gimcheon and Gumi of the Gyeongbu Line.
KR Chairman Kim Han-young said, ¡°KR will scrutinize project feasibility studies into the extension projects of Cheongcheon and Daegu area metropolitan railway networks with the goal of not only improving settlement conditions and smaller cities but also overcoming a regional extinction crisis.¡±
KR Launches Construction of Gangneung-Jejin Section of Donghae North Line
Korea National Railway said on Nov. 2 KR put on a public notice the implementation of a project to build the Gangneung-Jejin section of the Donghae North Line.
The project calls for building a 111.7 km-long railway portion, extending from Gangneung to Goseong via Sokcho at a cost of 2,757.6 billion won.
The project consists of four sections, to be done on a design and construction turn-key basis and four other portions.
The turn-key portions — 1st, 2nd, 4th and 9th sections — will cost 1,141.8 billion won. In September, KR completed preparatory work by striking deals on the turn-key basis sections.
KR plans to commission orders on four other sections in which basic and actual designs get under way in the first half of 2024 after obtaining permits from local governments.
The opening of the railway route is expected to take 51 minutes to make high-speed trains take you from Gangneung to Jejin stations.
Future connectivity and direct operation are predicted to take two hours and five minutes and three hours and twenty-six minutes to travel from Suseo to Jejin stations and from Bujeon to Jejin stations, respectively.
KR Chairman Kim said, ¡°We will do our best to secure the construction of more pleasant, high quality and safer railways by launching the Gangneung-Jejin project of Donghae North Line.¡±
