CJ Group Celebrated the 70th Anniversary on Nov. 5. CJ Group on Nov. 3 held a ceremony to memorialize the death of the late Sohn Bok-nam, the mother of CJ Group Chairman Lee Jay-hyun.
The anniversary event coincided with a “strategy meeting of reconstructing “OnlyOne,” the business group’s management tenet.
The closed meeting took place with CEOs of the group’s subsidiaries and executives, including CJ Corp. President Kim Hong-ki, in attendance.
Also present at the memorial ceremony at CJ Manpower Institute were CJ Chairman Lee, Vice Chairman Lee Mi-kyung of CJ ENM, Lee Sun-ho, head of the Food Growth Drive Office at CJ CheilJedang, Lee Kyeong-hoo at the Brand Strategy Office at CJ ENM, and Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik of CJ Group.
The participants pledged to overcome a crisis facing the group and make a leap forward again.
In his speech at the event, CJ Chairman Lee said, “Responsibility of reminding the OnlyOne management tenet amid a saturated growth of the business group is more significant than any time.” Chairman Lee urged the participants to be determined to achieve what the group must do.
The OnlyOne management tenet mean values being "first, best, and different" in all aspects, With the ONLYONE philosophy at heart, CJ continues to create innovative products, services, systems, and businesses.
A CJ Group official said, “It is designed to recollect the late Sohn and the late former chairman’s management tenets and solidify fundamentals in consideration of stark management conditions.” CJ Group did not hold a separate group wide event.
The late founder Lee Byung-chul designated Nov. 5 as the anniversary day of celebrating the first production of sugar by the predecessor of CJ CheilJednag at its Busan plant in 1953.
The day has been observed by CJ Group as the group’s establishment anniversary day.
The late Sohn is known to have contributed to the birth and growth of CJ Group the way Chairman Lee had always described her, saying, “Mother is the ship owner and I’m the captain.”
The late Sohn died at age of 89 on Nov. 5, 2022, the day of the group’s establishment anniversary.
Her’s first memorial anniversary day was the group’s 70th establishment anniversary day.
The Education Hall, the main hall of CJ Manpower Institute, has been used as a tribute space of her to spread the entrepreneurial spirits, such as humbleness the late Sohn inherited.
The institute in Pildong, downtown Seoul, had the site of a house the late Sohn and Chairman Lee lived for his childhood period.

CJ CheilJedang Holds Sales Promotion Event in Celebration of 70th Anniversary
CJ CheilJedang said on Nov. 19 the company will hold a sales promotion event to celebrate the 70th anniversary in cooperation with e-Commerce platforms, such as Naver.
CJ CheilJedang is holding a thank-you event to celebrate the 70th anniversary at Naver’s Brand Store. Up to 70 percent discounts will be offered on about 20 CJ Cheiljedang products, including hetbahn, Bibigo Wang gyoja and spam.
The company is holding a similar sales promotion at B Mart to give up to 70 percent discounts to CJ CheilJedang’s all products, including Gourmet Sobaba Chicken and Bibigo Mandu.
A CJ CheilJedang official said, “We will strive to offer diverse benefits to consumers in cooperation with e-Commerce platforms in the future.”
