The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) on Oct. 5 came up with strategies to nurture the digital maritime transportation information industry to be a global digital maritime power, at a session of the Emergency Economic Ministers¡¯ Meeting.
Digital technology has been recognized as a core factor to making ships evolve into a safer, more convenient and efficient fashion, since ships undergo digital transformation fast in the wake of the development of the advanced ICT technology.
The global digital maritime transportation information market is predicted to stand at about 145 trillion won by 2027 with an annual average growth rate of 8 percent.
The government plans to work out plans to develop the digital maritime transportation information industry with the goal of nurturing export enterprises with a competitive edge, and creating added value worth 6.5 trillion won.
First of all, MOF plans to offer funds to promising digital maritime transportation information companies and SMEs using a new maritime industry fund.
The ministry plans to develop 42 core digital technologies and 39 commercialized services by implementing R&D projects, costing 230 billion won by 2027.
The government will allow companies to utilize the e-Navigation service, primarily operated by the government, as the open spatial information platform while policy and private financing circles will offer preferential interest rate treatment to create demand for digital ship building.
MOF Minister Cho Seung-hwan said, ¡°The government will solidify Korea¡¯s exports and economic growth by nurturing world-class companies in the digital maritime transportation information sector by making the most of the competitiveness of the Korean maritime and ship building industries.¡±

MOF Inspects Construction of Ports to Ensure Safety
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) plans to look into the construction of 50 port areas across the nation, including the New Port of Busan Port for four weeks until Nov. 10.
Among those subject to inspection in accordance with the act on serious industrial disasters were nine sites out of 15 in Busan and five out of six sites in Ulsan.
Nine inspection teams, each a four-member delegation, consist of the director-general in charge of port at MOF, construction safety technicians and officials.
MOF Minister Cho said, ¡°MOF will conduct substantial inspection to ensure the safety of port construction site workers and take supplementary steps in a swift and careful fashion.¡±
