SK Telecom said on Oct. 10 the telecom service provider commercialized and introduced 400Gbps wired networks.

The conventional wired networks transmit traffic at a speed of 100Gbps.

The large capacity wired networks, introduced by SK Telecom, can send traffic at a speed of 400Gbps.

SK Telecom is decided to introducing 400Gbps wired networks connecting backbones to brace for rising services requiring a large volume of telecom data traffic, such as AI, cloud and metaverse, as well as the expanding of telecom networks following the upcoming 5G upgrade and the commercialization of 6G.

SK Telecom plans to reduce the number of wired networks connected to backbones, increase network management efficiency and build a system to nimbly cope with breakdowns and trouble by introducing 400Gbps wired networks.

The introduction of the new technology is expected to reduce consumption energy for the connection of backbones, cutting space for installing lines and equipment, and dwindling line construction, thus reaping achievements in the ESG perspective.

SK Telecom has completed the application of the new technology at the Seongsu-Boramae backbone section, and it plans to expand 400Gbps wired networks to other backbone sections across the nation through further testing and monitoring.

SK Telecom is also implementing a project to upgrade an AI-based integration check-up and surveillance automation system for the management of wired networks, such as lines and equipment, essential for advancing large-volume backbones.

Senior Executive Vice President Lee Jong-hoon, in charge of infrastructure engineering at SK Telecom, said, ¡°The introducing of second large-volume backbones will be able to brace for rising traffic following the commercialization of 5G and large-volume traffic following the upcoming 5G upgrade and the commercialization of 6G.¡±
