Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) has been operating its landfill site in a stable fashion by periodically managing original ground bed subsidence, each waste layer subsidence and leachate levels through an integrated monitoring system, SLC said on Oct. 25.
Sudokwon Landfill Site has to brace for possible safety accidents, such as the potential collapse of weak beds, since the site has been built on a sea reclamation area.
To this end, SLC has measured and managed information, such as subsidence amounts, leachate levels, landfill weight and waste density on regular intervals by installing 736 measurement equipment pieces.
SLC has been redoubling efforts to optimize the efficient use of the limited landfill space by analyzing characteristics of waste compression using measurement information and readjusting the height of landfill layers and the width of embankments.
Park Jong-keun, senior deputy general manager in charge of landfill at SLC, said, “The landfill site has been so far managed in a stable and economical fashion without a single collapse accident through on-site, geo-engineering measurement management.”

SLC Dream Park’s Wildflower Complex Certified as Exemplary Urban Forest by KFS
Dream Park’s wildflower complex at the Sudokwon landfill site in Seo-gu, Incheon, was designated as an exemplary urban forest by Korea Forest Service (KFS).
KFS minister certifies urban forests that have been built and managed in an exemplary fashion in accordance with Article 18 of the act on the building and managing of urban forests.
Dream Park’s wildflower complex was once used as a site of filing up coal briquette waste, but the site has now turned into an ecological green zone, created according to a master plan on the Dream Park, drawn up by SLC.
The wildflower complex, opened to the general public in May 2019, is now used as a space for citizens’ promenading, taking rest and environmental education.
With Dream Park’s wildflower complex, designated as an exemplary urban forest, a certification signboard is expected to be installed. It will be revaluated for re-certification every five years.
The complex is expected to be operated and managed in an efficient fashion in cooperation with KFS and related organizations.
SLC President Song Byung-uk said, “Now that Dream Park’s wildflower complex is designated as an exemplary urban forest, we will manage the complex in a systematic fashion to make it an exemplary urban forest, and SLC will contribute to building a resources circulation society by making it known that the landfill site, once recognized as a non-preference (or unwanted) facility, can be changed into a recreation space for shared growth with the regional community.”
Meanwhile, the wildflower complex was designated as an outstanding landscape administration practice by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and an outstanding collaboration practice by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in 2019.

Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. held “One Mind, Athletic Meeting with Residents” in cooperation of the landfill residents’ support consultation body at Residents’ Athletic Ground of Dream Park in Seo-gu, Incheon, on Oct. 31.
