KR, KAC Join Forces to Cooperate on Digital Transformation in Railway and Aviation Sectors
Korea National Railway and Korea Airports Corp. (KAC) struck an MOU on mutual technology exchange and cooperation to lead future railway and aviation sectors based on digital twin technology.
A digital twin is a virtual representation of an object or system that spans its lifecycle, is updated from real-time data, and uses simulation, machine learning and reasoning to help decision-making.
Under the deal, a digital twin technology will be introduced into the overall railway infrastructure to comply with the current government¡¯s state goal of realizing a digital platform government.
Both sides are expected to have prominence of the so-called K-railway known abroad by jointly entering overseas markets based on building railway-aviation connectivity transportation networks and digital transportation system operation technology.
KR also plans to establish mid- and long-term plans to build a digital twin integration management system, combining overall areas, such as railway design, construction, maintenance/repair and facility/asset management, with big data, IoT and AI technologies by making the most of building information modeling (BIM) and digital twin and implement it on a gradual basis.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility.
KR Chairman Kim said, ¡°The agreement will serve as an opportunity for the whole of the railway industry to undergo digital transformation, thus raising the competitiveness of digital technology so railway can play a pivotal role as core transportation means in the 4th Industrial Revolution era.¡±
