Minister Nam Sung-hyun of Korea Forest Service delivers a commemorative speech at a ceremony to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Mountain Day in Goseong on Oct. 18.

Domestic forestry product amounts were tallied at 7,725.8 billion won in 2022, a surge of 527.6 billion won, or a 7.3 percent year-on-year increase.

Korea Forestry Service (KFS) announced forestry product amounts for 2022 based on a survey, which included fruit, landscaping products and medicinal plants.

The survey, designated in 1976, is designed to figure out production volume of 14 kinds of 145 forestry products. It¡¯s used to inform decision related to forestry policies, such as each region¡¯s forestry product supply and demand.

Outcomes of the survey showed that rising forestry product amounts are primary attributable to quarried stones and production, coupled with the rising construction economy.

Short-term income from forestry products shot up 26 billion won, or 1.1 percent, compared to the previous year, with the help of landscaping products (an 11 percent jump) and fruit (a 6.2 percent surge) made up for declining production of medicinal plants, wild edible greens and mushrooms.

Production of medicinal plants, wild edible greens and mushrooms dropped 5.1 percent, 3 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively.

By region, Gyeongsangbuk-do ranked first with 1,346.4 billion won, followed by Gyeongsangnam-do with 1,205.7 billion won and Gangwon-do with 1,147.7 billion won. Outcomes of the survey can be found via the forest and forestry statics platform.

Lee Sun-mi, head of the Forestry Big Data Team, said, ¡°We will produce more precise statistics and offer support so support policies can be prepared timely for people in the forestry industry who try to produce forestry products amid stark conditions, such as climate change.¡±

Gangwon Forestry Exhibition 2023 coincided with a ceremony to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Mountain Day in Goseong, Gangwon-do, on Oct. 18.

As International Mountain Day was first declared in 2002 by the United States, Korea Forestry Service designated Oct. 18, 2002 as Mountain Day to highlight the values and importance of mountains.

Mountain Day has been observed every year since 2002.

The 2023 Mountain Day anniversary event took place with those who contributed to the development of the forestry industry and forestry organization officials in attendance under the theme ¡°Sustainable Future, Forest 100-Year Vision.¡±

During the event, 12 people were honored with orders and other prizes in recognition of their contribution to the development of the forestry industry.

The coveted Order of Civil Order, Moran Medal went to Chairman Kim Myeong-jeon of Korea Green Ranger, which has carried out experiences and educational activities through forests targeting youth and children since 1991.

In his commemorative speech at the anniversary event, KFS Minister Nam Sung-hyun said, ¡°As this year marks the 50th anniversary of afforestation, which was launched according to the 10-year national afforestation plan in 1973, Korea will usher in an era in which people can enjoy happiness by utilizing affluent forests that have been nurtured well for the past 50 years.¡±

KFS will devote itself to making forests sites of people¡¯s life, work and rest with diverse values so their economic, environmental, social and cultural values can be maximized to the fullest possible extent, he said.

Gangwon Forestry Exhibition 2023 is being held at the main venue of Gangwon World Jamboree Center in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, and other areas in Goseong, Sokcho, Inje and Yangyang for a 31-day run from Sept. 22 until Oct. 22.
