Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA) held a ceremony to launch a new container service connection for Gwangyang and China at the Gwangyang Container Terminal (GWCT) on July 4.

The new liner service, operated by CNC, a subsidiary of CMA-CGM, is expected to put a freighter ship carrying about 1,700 cargoes, and make a call at Gwangyang Port once weekly. The new liner service route links Gwangyang, Dalian, Qingdao and Busan.

YGPA celebrated the arrival of CNC Bangkok, the first ship of the newly launched liner service by presenting flower bouquets and gift goods to the skipper and crew members.

With YGPA¡¯s launch of the new liner service, Gwangyang Port is predicted to create 43,000 TEU of new cargo volumes annually. It is expected to offer key shipping logistics options to shippers wanting to export goods to China.

YGPA President Park Sung-hyun said, ¡°The opening of a new liner shipping service is expected to boost cargo volumes at Gwangyang Port and raise importers and exporters¡¯ convenience through reinforced connectivity of shipping routes, and we at YGPA will make every effort to attract new liner shipping services under management tenets of prioritizing customers.¡±

Meanwhile, on the back of the launch of Heung A Line¡¯s Busan Ningbo Xpress and Evergreen¡¯s Korea Taiwan Haiphong liner shipping services, the liner shipping connectivity index released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) showed that Gwangyang Port rose 0.6 points to 62.5 points in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the fourth quarter of last year.

Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority attracted the new container liner shipping service, dubbed ¡°Korea Taiwan Haiphong,¡± that connects Gwangyang Port, Japan and the Southeast Asian region, the YGPA said on June 19.

The new container liner shipping service, to be operated by Evergreen, a Taiwanese shipping company, will be put into service once weekly.

Three ships, each carrying about 2,000 cargoes, will be operated to transport cargoes from Japan, Gwangyang and Southeast Asian region.

The Ever Chaste, the first ship for the newly container liner shipping service, made a call at Korea International Terminal on June 17.

The new container liner ship route involves Hakata, Japan, Ulsan, Busan, Gwangyang, China, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Taipei, and Hakata.

With YGPA¡¯s attracting the latest container liner shipping service on top of CMA-CGM¡¯s Guam Saipan Express and Heung A Line¡¯s Busan Ningbo Xpress this year, Gwangyang Port saw weekly container liner shipping services and liner shipping services to Southeast Asia surge to 78 times and 28.5 times, respectively.

The latest container liner shipping service is expected to offer convenient transportation services to Japanese import shipping owners and exporters to Southeast, and it is predicted to create 23,000 TEU of cargo volumes annually.

YGPA President Park Sung-hyun said, ¡°YGPA pursues customer top priority management for the convenience of exporters and importers, and the launch of the successive new liner shipping services is expected to improve satisfaction of exporters and importers using Gwangyang Port by ramping up shipping route connectivity and stabilizing shipping route services.¡±
