Samsung C&T Construction, No. 1 in Construction Capability Assessment 10 Straight Years

Samsung C&T Construction Group is expanding an image construction recording system in place at major construction sites to prevent substandard construction and examine safety danger factors.

Samsung C&T Construction Group placed 1st for the 10th consecutive year in the latest Construction Capability Assessment.

Daewoo E&C and Hyundai Engineering saw their ranking go up three spots to third and to sixth, respectively.

Outcomes of a survey of 77,675 construction companies across the nation, released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), also known as the Construction Capability Assessment showed that the No. 1 position for this year went to Samsung C&T Construction Group.

Samsung C&T Construction Group saw its construction capability assessment amounts decline from 21,947.2 billion won last year to 20,729.6 billion won this year, but the contractor retained the top position 10 years in row.

Every year, MOLIT announces the Construction Capability Assessment, based on the construction performance, management status, technological ability, and credit rating of all the construction companies nationwide in order to help procurement departments choose their appropriate construction companies.

Hyundai E&C ranked 2nd by posting 14,979.1 billion won, an increase of 2,375 billion won over last year.

Daewoo E&C ranked 3rd, up three spots over the previous year, by chalking up 9,768.3 billion won, an increase of 537.8 billion won.

Hyundai Engineering logged 9,736 billion won, a rise of 617.5 billion won to see its ranking jump three places to 4th.

The assessment gap between Daewoo E&C and Hyundai Engineering was just 32.3 billion won. GS E&C placed fifth, same as last year.

DL E&C and POSCO E&C saw their ranking drop three places, respectively. DL E&C ranked 6th by posting 9,549.6 billion won, while POSCO E&C logged 8,992.4 billion won to place 7th. Lotte E&C and SK ecoplant placed 8th and 9th by posting 6,093.5 billion won and 5,960.6 billion won, respectively.

Hoban Construction ranked 10th, up one place from 11th in 2022, by recording 4,396.5 billion won.

The contractor reentered the circle of the top 10 contractors for the first time since 2019. HDC Hyundai Development Company, which logged 3,071.3 billion won, saw its ranking decline from 10th place to 11th.

It was noteworthy that Xi C&A saw its ranking jump 108 spots to 55th place this year. Xi C&A is a plant company, acquired by Xi S&D, a subsidiary of GS E&C.

In the civil engineering sector, Hyundai E&C, Daewoo E&C and SK ecoplant ranked 1st 2nd and 3rd by logging 1,581.3 billion won, 1,561.2 billion won and 1,112 billion won, respectively.

In the architecture category, Samsung C&T Construction Group, Hyundai E&C and GS E&C placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd by chalking up 10,629 billion won, 7,560.1 billion won and 5,529.7 billion won, respectively.

In the apartment construction sector, Daewoo E&C ranked 1st with 4,768.4 billion won, followed by GS E&C with 4,622.9 billion won and Hyundai E&C with 4,617.3 billion won.

MOLIT will come up with a plan to overhaul the Construction Capability Assessment in August, which will be applied to next year’s evaluation.

The current assessment, calculated by simply adding different assessment categories, such as the construction performance, management status, and technological ability, is said to fail to offer exact information.
