New Chairman Jung Ki-suck of the National Health Insurance Service said on July 11, ¡°People, grappling with difficulties, caused by burdensome medical costs, will be given essential medical care sufficiently.¡±
Prof. Jung Ki-suck of Hallym University Medical College took office as NHIS chairman at NHIS headquarters in Wonju, Gangwon-do, on July 11.
In his inaugural speech, Chairman Jung said, ¡°NHIS will step up support to people in vulnerable brackets suffering from difficulties, caused by huge medical costs through essential medical care policy support related to people¡¯s lives and strengthening of disaster medical cost support.¡±
¡°The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has reawakened the importance of the national health insurance regime as a social safety net, and it will be further evolved into a stabilized one to brace for another crisis,¡± he said.
As for major threatening causes surrounding NHIS, Chairman Jung cited an entry into a super aging society, rising chronic diseases, social and economic environment changes, such as anxiety over upcoming pandemics and steep expenditure increase compared to limited fiscal resources.
Chairman Jung stressed innovation to establish sustainable insurance finance.
NHIS will operate a medical insurance coverage management system using substantially lest unnecessary expenditures and eliminate financial loopholes thoroughly, he said.
NHIS will monitor all processes, ranging from examination, testing, medication, surgical procedure, and operation to the education of patients. It will come up with steps to overhaul related ones.

Chairman Jung emphasized the performing of all jobs based on objective grounds thoroughly and redoubling of efforts to raise funds to secure stable revenues and right qualification and imposing of premiums to brace for declining premium revenues.
Besides, he said NHIS will implement tasks, such as the establishing of a health management regime tailored to meet needs of each life cycle, an elderly long-term care insurance management and raising of values using big data.
¡°The national health insurance system has been developed to the extent the world envies it, but we should not rest on our laurels,¡± he said.
Chairman Jung stressed integrity and innovation as well as grounds-oriented administration.
Chairman Jung is a seasoned expert in the contagion disease area. He graduated from Seoul National University Medical College.
He served as a professor with Hallym University Medical College, president of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital and head of the predecessor of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.
He is also evaluated to have contributed to restoring people¡¯s life to normal since he served as chairman of the National Infection Disease Crisis Response Advisory Committee and head of the Special Response Team against the COVID-19 Pandemic.
