Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon was elected as co-chairman of Metropolis, the World Association of the Major Metropolises, at the association’s 14th General Assembly in Brussels on June 14, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) said.
Seoul Mayor Oh’s term is three years, running between 2024 and 2026.
The six cities serving as co-chairman are Barcelona’s metropolitan area, Seoul, Guangzhou, Montevideo, Tehran and Brussels’ metropolitan area.
Seoul had been reelected four times as Metropolis’ regional vice chairman since 2011.
Seoul Mayor Oh’s electing of co-chairman has proved to demonstrate its heightened global leadership.
SMG has pursued the first priority value “walking with people in the vulnerable brackets.”
SMG is expected to be given more opportunities to share and export policies in which global metropolises have shown keen interest — diverse welfare policies the metropolitan government has implemented to solve urban bipolarization, smart policies based on advanced technologies and mass transportation systems.
Seoul has been awarded the right to host Metropolis’ 40th anniversary General Assembly.
SMG, citing a would-be host cities strengths: rich cultural heritage, attractive K-culture and diverse MICE infrastructure, had persuaded the Metropolis’ cities serving as chairman of the association and members of the governing body, so the latest general assembly approved Seoul, the venue of Metropolis’ General Assembly marking the 40th anniversary.
In 2025, it will be the first time in 23 years Seoul will host Metropolis’ General Assembly. Seoul was the venue of Metropolis’ general assembly in 2002.
Dir.-Gen. Kim Ki-hyun in charge of new industry policies at SMG, participated in the association’s 14th General Assembly in Brussels on June 14 and struck a deal on the venue of the next general assembly with Metropolis secretariat.
Metropolis’s 40th General Assembly will take place in Seoul for a four-day run in June 2025.
SMG said, unlike general international conventions, Metropolis’ General Assembly will be an opportunity of festivals to be filled with diverse events in which mega cities around the world can take part.
Metropolis is a global network of major cities and metropolitan areas that seeks to elevate the collective voice of metropolises on the global stage as well as foster global cooperation, dialogue, and sharing of knowledge across political and geographical divides.
Metropolis, created in Montreal in 1984, has also operated as the metropolitan section of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), since its constitution in 2004.
Seoul joined Metropolis in 1987. Seoul mayor has been serving as Metropolis’ regional vice chairman city since 2011.
