Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. (KOEM) conducted joint coastal clean-up activities at 12 KOEM branches in cooperation with private, government and public circles on the occasion of the 28th Ocean Day anniversary, the corporation said on May 30.
In 2018, KOEM designated Friday on the third week of each month as ¡°Coastal Clean-Up Day¡± in accordance with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries¡¯ policy of regularizing coastal clean-up activities.
KOEM¡¯s 12 branch offices across the nation, such as Busan, Incheon and Yeosu have conducted drives to pick up coastal garbage on a regular basis.
The latest coast clean-up drive was joined by officials from regional offices of oceans and fisheries, maritime police, local governments and related organizations as well as neighborhood residents.
Meanwhile, KOEM has spearheaded efforts to raise public awareness toward coastal garbage reduction by conducting activities, such as a public upcycle contest and ¡°Aljup Campaign,¡± a kind of ¡°plogging,¡± meaning picking up garbage while jogging.
KOEM Chairman Han Ki-joon said, ¡°The coastal clean-up drive is hoped to serve as an opportunity to awaken the value of our oceans and the importance of protecting the marine environment on the occasion of Ocean Day anniversary, and KOEM will do its utmost to make oceans clean and healthy through diverse activities.¡±
KOEM Conducts Public Contest on Disaster Prevention R&D Tasks for the Year 2024
Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. will hold a public contest on disaster prevention R&D tasks for the Year 2024, designed to pursue marine disaster prevention project innovation and explore future growth engines of the marine environment until Aug. 11, KOEM said on June 7.
The public contest is designed to explore new eco-friendly technologies related to disaster prevention projects and support SMEs¡¯ startups and job creation and ramp up shared growth.
Categories of the public contest divide into disaster prevention technology innovation, strengthening of marine safety, marine data, technology convergence, and general affairs.
Kim Tae-gon, chief of KOEM¡¯s Marine Disaster Prevention Division, said, ¡°KOEM will make diverse efforts to promote the development of the marine environment, such as marine pollution disaster prevention and marine safety, and I ask for much concern for the successful preceding of the public contest.¡±

KOEM Conducts Drive to Pick Up Coastal Garbage in Gangneung, Incheon, Pohang and Jeju
Korea Marine Environment Management Corp. is conducting a nationwide public drive, dubbed ¡°Aljup Campaign,¡± to pick up coastal garbage with people in attendance in cooperation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, KOEM said on June 7.
The Aljup Campaign is a kind of ¡°plogging¡± clean-up drive with people in attendance in which volunteers report garbage deserted in coastal areas and pick up it while walking or jogging.
In May, the drive started at Ulwangni, Incheon, Songjeong, Busan, and Hajodae Beach in Gangwon-do. The campaign will take place at major beaches across the nation on Friday on the third week of each month until October.
The campaign will be held at Anmok Beach in Gangneung on June 10, at Wangsan Beach in Incheon, at Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, and at Saehwa Beach in Jeju Island on June 17. Singer Sean and television personality Tyler Rasch will join the drive in Gangneung and in Incheon, respectively.
Lee Ki-dong, head of KOEM¡¯s Marine Preservation Division, said, ¡°All people¡¯s efforts are necessary to solve marine environment pollution, caused by marine garbage, and I ask for people¡¯s participation and concern for the Aljup Campaign.¡±
