Cho Sung-don, head of the External Cooperation Office at Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD), took office as the fifth chairman of KORAD at an inauguration ceremony at KORAD headquarters in Gyeongju on May 25.
He delivered his inaugural speech, in which he attached top priority to the progressing of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste (LILW) treatment business and communication with the people.
KORAD Chairman Cho said 14 years has passed since the LILW treatment business was launched, and now is the time when it has to prove its business outcomes.

He stressed the progression of the LILW treatment business based on a stable foundation by implementing projects, such as expanding the amount of radwaste being accepted and treated, KORAD¡¯s representative business, near-surface disposal facility and radwaste analysis center projects in a smooth fashion.
¡°It is an undeniable fact that KORAD has been assigned as an institution responsible for treating high-level radwaste in accordance with the Act on Managing Radwaste, and an initial, top priority will be attached to building a foundation so the high-level radwaste treatment business can be implemented in a flawless fashion,¡± Chairman Cho said.
Chairman Cho said the radwaste treatment business is based on public trust, and communicating with outside stakeholders is KORAD staff¡¯s most important role.
New KORAD Chairman Cho was born in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do, in 1959. He obtained a master¡¯s degree in maritime business administration from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
He held KORAD¡¯s major positions, such as head of the Management Division, chief of the Office of Planning and Coordination, head of the Office of Outcome Management Office, chief of the Strategic Planning Office, and chief of the External Cooperation Office.
KORAD Conducts ¡®Anti-Disaster Response Drill¡¯ for 2023
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency conducted the ¡°2023 anti-disaster response drill to make Korea safe¡± on June 8.
The drill was conducted on the assumption that landslide, caused by downpours, damaged LILW facilities, causing casualties. The master plan on safety was established by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS).
About 80 officials from Gyeongju City, Gyeongju Fire-fighting Office, Gyeongju Police Station, Dongkuk University, Gyeongju Hospital and other related institutions participated in the drill.
How to promote cooperation among the participating institutions was examined during the drill. The drill was done through real-time connection between KORAD headquarters and LILW treatment site, using the Public Safety LTE (PS-LTE).
KORAD Chairman Cho Sung-don said, ¡°Now that disasters could occur frequently and complexly due to climate change, KORAD take thorough steps to brace for disasters and ramp up close cooperation among related institutions to respond and restore swiftly in case of the occurrence of a disaster.¡±
