The Seoul National University Alumni Association held the 2023 Regular General Meeting and the 25th Gwanak Grande Prize Awards ceremony at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on March 24.
In his opening speech at the event, Chairman Kim Jong-sup of the Seoul National University Alumni Association, said, ¡°The Social Contribution Committee under the umbrella of the association has implemented projects in cooperation of SNU¡¯s global social contribution group.¡±
¡°SNU students offered an educational program on landing jobs and startup capabilities to local students in Lombok, Malaysia, from Jan. 25 to Feb. 4, and I¡¯d joined them there,¡± Chmn. Kim said.
¡°We plan to implement a project on agro-livestock industry technology and educational sharing in Laos in July and a mentoring project targeting multicultural household children in Korea next year, and alumni who are interested in such social contribution activities may participate in a perspective of contributing their talents,¡± he said.
Chairman Kim said, ¡°I whole-heartedly extend congratulations on Chairman Lee Jae-won, Chairman Lee Bu-sup, Chairman Cho Kyung-il and Chairman Hah Ki-wan who have been honored with Gwanak Grande Prize Awards.¡±
Chairman Lee Jae-won raised a combined 1 billion won in scholarships for the association and contributed large amounts of money for the scholarship foundation of SNU Commerce College Alumni Association of Bundang SNU Hospital while Chairman Lee Bu-sup served as chairman of the SNU Engineering College Alumni Association.
Lee was the first chairman of the Gwanak Businessmen¡¯s Association, and had donated scholarships and development funds to SNU for about 20 years, he said.
Seoul National University Alumni Association delivered $100,000 in an emergency relief fund to Turkey, which was hit by a deadly earthquake last month and donated 10 million won to a foundation to support victims of Japanese¡¯ forced labor for the future of Korea and Japan, and these were part of efforts for SNU alumni to put into practice social responsibilities from a global perspective, Kim said.
Among the winners of the 5th Gwanak Grande Prize Awards are Chairman & CEO Lee Bu-sup of Dongjin Semichem.
Dongjin Semichem Chairman Lee has been credited with his contribution to building foundation and development of the Korean fine chemical industry.
Lee was praised for having established Dongjin Semichem, a foaming agent and electronics materials maker, which ramped up the competitiveness of the Korean industries by localizing foaming agents and chemical materials for semiconductors for which Korea depended on imports.
Chairman Lee has been lauded for leading technologies of the Korean industries and contributing to localization by developing and securing new technologies using the company¡¯s own technologies.
Dongjin Semichem became the first Korean company to have localized extreme ultraviolet photoresist (EUV PR) materials, which had been dominated by Japanese companies in 2019 when Japan imposed export restrictions against Korea.
Dongjin Semichem¡¯s localizing EUV PR materials had contributed to Korean chip makers¡¯ competing in the global market.
Chairman Lee has been recognized for having implemented scholarship programs to nurture gifted manpower and fostering junior scholars.
He was presented with the SNU Development Contribution Prize and SNU Engineering College Development Contribution Award in recognition of having donated scholarships for about 20 years.
Dongjin Semichem Co., Ltd. produces fine chemicals for semiconductor and liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturing.
The company's products include photoresist materials and epoxy molding compounds. In addition, Dongjin Semichem also produces chemical foaming agents for plastic and rubber applications.
