KEPCO NF has been expanding its R&D outlay investments on a continuous basis in recent years.
In 2022, the company¡¯s R&D investment rate was 8.12 percent; successfully producing accident-tolerant fuel based on its own technology and completing preparations for a process qualification, building database on commercialization licenses and permits of HANA alloy nuclear fuel, and developing and building heat transfer experiment equipment for a circular rod.
KEPCO NF¡¯s R&D investment rate is more than the guideline recommended by the Ministry of Science & ICT (MSIT).
KEPCO NF President Choi Ik-soo said, ¡°KEPCO NF plans to double down on R&D investments on a continuous basis by conducting regular in-house research contests and participating in government-led R&D tasks related to the development of an innovative small modular reactor (SMR).

NSSC Chairperson Yoo Makes Inspection Tour into KEPCO NF
Chairperson Yoo Guk-hee of the Korea Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) made an inspection tour of KEPCO NF and looked into a site of radwaste reduction process on March 24.
KEPCO NF is supplying nuclear fuel to 25 nuclear power units in operation in Korea and the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates.
In the course of producing the nuclear fuel, about 1,300 drums of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste, such as working clothes, gloves and plastic products have been produced annually. Out of the total, roughly 1,300 drums have been reduced through pyrolysis and melt decontamination.
NSSC Chairperson Yoo examined pyrolysis and melt decontamination processes and radwaste storage. In particular, he looked into the high-intensity focused ultrasound melt decontamination process.
The extremely difficult metal waste treatment technology, developed for the first in Korea, was honored with the gold prize at BIXPO KEPCO International Invention Fair.
Chairperson Yoo stressed the need to secure radwaste management capabilities corresponding to the nation¡¯s nuclear power status to protect people¡¯s health form radiation and preserve the environment.
