KOWEPO Fires Up Nation¡¯s 1st Korean-Type Gas Turbine for Electricity Generation
Moves forward toward word¡¯s fifth gas turbine technology power

27(Mon), Mar, 2023

Officials from Korea Western Power Co., Doosan Enerbility and KEPCO E&C attend a ceremony to successfully ignite Korea¡¯s first gas turbine for generating electricity at the Gimpo Combined Cycle Power Plant on March 4.

Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) successfully ignited Korea¡¯s first gas turbine for electricity generation. If verification tests are finished successfully, Korea will be the world¡¯s fifth country to secure gas turbine technology for electricity generation.

KOWEPO started a Korean-type gas turbine at the Gimpo Combined Cycle Power Plant on March 4.

A variety of tests had been conducted after a Korean-type, 270MW-class gas turbine, developed by Doosan Enerbility on its own, was installed at Gimpo Combined Cycle Power Plant, now being built by KOWEPO, in April 2022.

The successful ignition of a Korean-type gas turbine for power generation takes on significance since it has secured the safety of homegrown gas turbine technologies and foundation to verify a Korean-type gasification combined cycle power plant.

KOWEPO plans to test-operate Korean-type gasification combined cycle power plant until 2025 after it is to go into commercial operation in July.

If its verification is completed, Korea will be the world¡¯s fifth country to design, produce and operate a large-sized power generation gas turbine after the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy.

A KOWEPO official said, ¡°We¡¯ll do our utmost to ensure the stable operation of power plants to supply electricity to the state and heat to regional communities by successfully verifying the operation of a power generation gas turbine without interruption.¡±

KOWEPO Steps Up Cooperation with SMEs to Practice Shared Growth Management

Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) is accelerating efforts to promote field management to promote shared growth and solve difficulties that outstanding cooperative SMEs experience.

KOWEPO President Park Hyung-duck toured By Industries, a metal fabrication company located in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, on March 10, and lent an ear to hardships and grievances the company experiences.

It was the third time KOWEPO President Park made the latest tour following a similar visit to Daeyoong Scale Industrial Co, a measurement equipment maker and one of KOWEPO¡¯s outstanding cooperative SMEs, in January and Mpole System, a digital maker, in February.

By Industries is a strong mid-size enterprise, which posted 11.2 billion won in sales last year.

The company has been conducting continuous research, development, precision calibration, and product testing in measurement, calibration, testing and system construction projects.

By Industries conducted a project to verify a belt conveyor for Taean Thermal Power Units 9 and 10 in cooperation with KOWEPO.

The company¡¯s product was designated as an innovative product by the Public Procurement Service (PPS) in recognition of its outstanding performances.

The company has also continued to carry out diverse shared growth projects, such as localizing of a limestone unloader, exploring foreign markets, and a project to build a smart factory in cooperation with KOWEPO.
