KOMIPO Strikes MOU to Develop Mineral Carbonization Technology
Deal calls for installing facility to verify the commercialization of mineral carbonization at the Wonju Green Combined Cycle Power Plant and produce eco-friendly blocks

27(Mon), Mar, 2023

Korea Midland Power inked an MOU on the development of mineral carbonization (CCU) technology using power plant emission gases and incineration materials with KEPCO Research Institute, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources and Jangsung Industry Co. on Feb. 2.

Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO) struck an MOU on the development of mineral carbonization (CCU) technology using power plant emission gases and incineration ash with KEPCO Research Institute, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) and Jangsung Industry Co. on Feb. 2.
Mineral carbonization is one of the carbon capture utilization & storage (CCUS) technologies, which are designed to implement carbon neutrality.

Mineral carbonation is the fixation of CO2 using alkaline and alkaline-earth oxides, such as magnesium oxide (MgO) and calcium oxide (CaO).

Chemical reactions between these materials and dissolved CO2 produce magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

Under the deal, KOMIPO and the other signatory institutions agreed to erect a facility to verify the commercialization of mineral carbonization at the Wonju Green Combined Cycle Power Plant and produce eco-friendly blocks.

The agreement is expected to build a feasible value chain of resources circulation economy by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 20 million tons annually, utilizing incineration materials of 10,000 tons.

KOMIPO President Kim Ho-bin said, ¡°We¡¯ll do our utmost to contribute to achieving the nation¡¯s carbon neutrality goal by leading future core technologies, such as hydrogen/ammonia combustion technology and CCUS using cold and heat energy.¡±

KOMIPO Honored with Special Prize

Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO) received a special award in the climate change water resources category at the 2022 Climate Change Response and Water Management Outstanding Company Awards ceremony, organized by Carbon Disclosure Project Korea Committee on Feb. 10.

CDP is a global initiative, established in the UK in 2000, designed to disclose companies¡¯ information on environment management and issue reports so that financial institutions can consult them.

KOMIPO has been credited for implementing ¡°ReWater 70¡± initiative, established by the power company with the goal of raising reutilization rate of wastewater, such as sewage and rainwater to 70 percent.

The company has been praised for achieving a track record of reducing 2.3 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 through global greenhouse emission reduction activities beyond its power plant boundaries.

KOMIPO President Kim Ho-bin said, ¡°Our winning of CDP¡¯s special award is considered as an evaluation of KOMIPO¡¯s environment management activities from a global standard perspective, and KOMIPO will fulfil its responsibilities as a public energy company by continuously making efforts toward carbon neutrality and for improving the quality of people¡¯s life.¡±

KOMIPO¡¯s Boryeong Power Plant Releases Young Sea Cucumbers

KOMIPO¡¯s Boryeong Power Plant headquarters released 160,000 sea cucumbers in cooperation with officials from Boryeong City, Boryeong Agricultural Cooperative and regional fisheries communities in such a first event of the year 2023 on March 6.

The young sea cucumbers, produced at a fish fry cultivation center of the plant, were released into the sea off Hyoja and Wonsan islets. They underwent health and disease screening tests before release.
