Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced a plan to implement the ¡°Great Han River Project¡± on March 9.
The project calls for converting the Jamsu Bridge into a full pedestrian one and plying riverside areas aboard gondolas.
Riverside areas will be made into space in which people can enjoy water sports and rest. A plaza will be created in sections, in which creeks converge.
People will be allowable to get to riverfront areas by pedestrian paths in less than 10 minutes, while a small marina for anchoring yachts and motorboats will be created near the Nanji Han River Park.
A gondola facility connecting the north and the south of the Han River will be built in the Jamsil area.
The project will consist 55 schemes under four core strategies: the Han River coexisting with nature; the river offering convenient movement; the river filled with attractions; and the river adding dynamics.
Pedestrians¡¯ paths will be created so people can gain access to the river within 10 minutes on foot.
Seven interchanges will be newly built or expanded by 2030, while 31 others will be remodeled.
Part of the Olympic Grand Road will be converted into an underground path, dubbed ¡°Amsa Chorok Road,¡± through which people can walk toward the river. It is to be dedicated this year.
Pedestrians¡¯ bridges are required to be built in the course of implementing the private sector¡¯s riverside projects.
Diverse transportation means will be created. Eco-friendly, self-driving buses will shuttle between Sangam-dong and Yeouido, while urban air mobility (UAM) will be made available.

A gondola facility will be built to connect the south and the north of the Han River. Jamsil-Ttukseom, Seoul Forest Park and Haneul Park in Sangam-dong are considered as the candidate site of the gondola facility.
Haneul Park is the site of ¡°Seoul Ring,¡± the world¡¯s largest ring-type spokeless amusement ride wheel.
Small marinas for anchoring yachts and motorboats will be built in spheres, such as Jamsil and Ichon.
The Seoul Water Sports will be dedicated near Nanji Han River Park this year.
The Yeouido Dock will be invigorated while projects to build marinas will be launched in 2025.
The Jamsil Bridge will be changed into a pedestrian bridge in which people can watch films and small-sized performances.
A 2nd Sejong Art Center will be built in Yeouido while a cultural yard will be created in front of the Yeouido Sibeom Apartment. Nodeulseom will be renovated as an islet filled with artistic features.
Riverside areas will be transformed into international sports spots by operating outside sports and leisure classes and programs on a regular basis and attracting related international sports events.
The natural environment of riverside areas will be preserved and restored. Restoration shore areas, totaling 57.1 km in length, will be converted into natural ones while ecological parks will be overhauled by 2025.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will transplant 210,000 trees while hosting the Seoul International Park Show in 2024.
Han River swimming pools will be converted into forest playground and ecological water amusement sites.
They will be changed into spaces in which flea markets and performances will be held around four seasons. A first such one will be opened in Jamsil next year.
Multi-purpose facilities will be built in riverside urban innovation zones, such as Jamsil and Yeouido.
