In his New Year¡¯s message, President Kang Joon-suk of Busan Port Authority (BPA ) said, ¡°The year 2023 will be a turning point in which Busan Port will have to cope with the pending crisis and make preparations for a future when the marine port and logistics industry experiences greater uncertainties than at any time.¡±

In this context, President Kang said BPA will devote itself to implementing the following policies with a focus on strengthening fundamentals of Busan Port and securing growth engines to make a new take-off.

First, he said, BPA will make sure Busan Port can establish itself as a global logistics hub by opening fully automated terminals and advancing its operation regime.

BPA will make thorough preparations so New Port¡¯s western container wharf (2-5 Phase) will be opened and operated as the nation¡¯s first fully automated port. BPA will prioritize the stability of the operation of North Port, which will undergo great changes.

The authority will join forces with the industry and port workers in taking stabilization steps, such as facility maintenance and relocation of logistics amounts to smoothly transfer functions of New Gamman and Jaseongdae wharves.

Second, President Kang said, BPA will realize a sustainable Busan Port through a fast transfer as an eco-friendly and smart port.

Busan Port has managed to dramatically reduce minute dust emissions through management tailored to tackle each air pollution source, such as ships, stevedoring equipment pieces and cargo cars.

Busan Port will have to support Korean maritime port and logistics companies to spearhead the port¡¯s carbon neutrality initiative.

BPA will take preemptive steps by establishing Busan Port¡¯s 2050 carbon neutrality master plan, reflecting national determined contributions (NDCs), and overhaul and implement carbon neutrality action tasks in the context of growth of Busan Port through regular communication with the industries.

The authority will do its utmost to build a smart port logistics system to help Busan Port lead the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution in all sectors, such as safety, port operation, construction and operation & maintenance.

Third, BPA will complete the first phase project to redevelop North Port as soon as possible and make the port a new driving force for the development of the region by fully implementing the second phase. Initially, the authority will make the most of developing landmark sites and operating a marina as innovative engines.

The marine culture district landmark site will be developed as a space designed to promote public interests and symbolize Busan.

The North Port Marina will be made as the nation¡¯s first multi-purpose marina facilities to balance public interests and profitability.

BPA will fully cooperate with central and local governments to cut diverse administrative procedures for the launch of the second phase to secure the continuity of the first phase.

In particular, as the nation is concentrating its capabilities to win the right to host 2030 World Expo, BPA will offer support to brace for a field inspection tour, to be made by the BIE in April.

Fourthly, he said, BPA will create Busan Port¡¯s growth engines through expanding of overseas logistics centers and raise its global standing.
