¡°Hyundai Motor Group will change all vehicles into software-defined vehicles (SDVs) by 2025,¡± Chairman Chung Eui-sun said.

Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung made the remarks while disclosing the group¡¯s business plan at a New Year¡¯s meeting at Namyang Research Institute in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, on Jan. 3.

Each vehicle is now outfitted with 200 to 300 chips, but the number will surge to 2,000 to 3,000 for future cars, and Hyundai Motor Group will be as good as an electronics company, he said.

In the past, automobiles centered around machines, such as engines, that depend on operational performances, but going forward, Hyundai¡¯s automobiles will be ¡°software defined vehicles,¡± whose competitiveness hinges on semiconductors and software.

The New Year¡¯s meeting was the company¡¯s first off-line event in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first such meeting held at Namyang Research Institute, the group¡¯s key R&D center.

This may be construed as Chairman Chung¡¯s message to stress the fact that its future competitiveness depends on technology.

This is in the context that Chairman Chung said Hyundai Motor Group does not spare any investments in technology development and manpower.

Chairman Chung stressed the significance of securing data. He said even if Hyundai Motor had employed Google¡¯s Android Automotive Operating System (OS) in the past, the automaker has used the ¡°ccOS,¡± developed on its own in 2019.

Hyundai Motor plans to ramp up competitiveness in areas, such as self-driving and vehicle control.

Hyundai Motor¡¯s full completion of transit to SDVs is expected to see production costs halved by simplifying such things as design and production.

Chairman Chung said all company systems, including R&D on top of SDVs, will be changed into software-centric ones.

The business group acquired 42dot, a self-driving company, to ramp up its software capabilities. President Song Chang-hyun, the founder of 42dcot, has been appointed to head the group¡¯s software business.

On the same day, President Song stressed the development of SDVs to realize a vision of prioritizing users¡¯ experiences and safety.

On the same day, Hyundai Motor Group revealed plans related to new businesses, including self-driving cars. Hyundai Motor plans to release in the first half of 2023 the G90 and EV9 in Korea, outfitted with Self-Driving Level 3 functions.

In North America, Hyundai Motor plans to commercialize a robotaxi service with Self-Driving Level 4 functions via its self-driving joint-venture Motional in cooperation with car-sharing service companies, including Uber.

Chairman Chung also stressed the importance of changing the company¡¯s corporate culture.

¡°We have a corporate culture of boldness, but an electronics company has a corporate culture of preciseness, so we need to be exact and precise to produce good quality products,¡± he said.

Chairman Chung called for a change in reporting, as Hyundai Motor Group Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo did — making a conclusion first, before alluding its reason and background.

The New Year¡¯s meeting took place at a format of a town hall meeting with a question and answer session between the president and other executives and their staff members.
