28(Thu), Feb, 2013

Lotte E&C is undertaking a combined cycle
power plant project in Al Manakher, Jordan.

Lotte Engineering and Construction Co. kicked off the construction of the 600Mw diesel thermal power plant for its owner, Independent Power Producer (IPP), at Almanaka, Jordan, some 30 km from Amman, the capital city of the Arab nation. The construction company won the project from the Jordan National Electric Power Co. for $550 million on an EPC (engineering, purchase and construction) basis.
Officials of the consortium consisting of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Japan¡¯s Mitsubishi Corp., Finland-based Wartsila (WDFS, sponsor), and Lotte E&C attended the signing ceremony held last month in Helsinki, Finland.
The consortium was awarded the operation rights and will be constructing the plant on an EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) basis under the contract.
The huge project involves the construction of 38 16Mw power generators, fuel storage facilities and other power-related facilities at the site.
Jordan plans to boost the power supply in the country to upgrade its potential for development.
Lotte is scheduled to complete the first stage of the project in February 2014, involving the construction of diesel power generators capable of turning out 250Mw of power, and complete the rest of the project by September 2014 and commence commercial operation of the power plant. At the moment, Lotte is engaged in the construction of the foundation of the power plant and installation of machinery, all related to civil engineering work.
Lotte has hired local employees including those for responsible positions as part of its efforts to secure the construction projects in Jordan. The company also expanded its welfare program for local employees and special work schedule during the Ramadan holiday as well as facilities where the Muslim employees can pray to show the company¡¯s respect for local culture and tradition and at the same time giving the local employees pride for being Lotte employees.
To overcome various problems in securing special materials the company expanded the number of personnel to build a one-stop-network for designing, procuring, and purchasing materials at the jobsite. The company also operates the material procurement management system in Europe and Dubai, UAE.
Director Lee Sang-mu in charge of the jobsite in Almanaka, Jordan, said Lotte has won recognition for its construction and engineering because of its completion of the Alkatrina thermal power plant in Jordan, which led the company to win the Almanaka project, the largest diesel thermal power plant in the world when completed, boosting the company¡¯s chance to enter the civilian thermal power construction market. ¡°We will upgrade the Lotte brand power in Jordan along with an excellent impression of Korea as a nation with high-level industrial technologies and manpower to use them,¡± Lee said.
