Chairman Chung Tae-soon of Korea Shipowners¡¯ Association (KSA) said, ¡°How the Korean shipping industry will brace for IMO¡¯s greenhouse gas emission restrictions and the future digital shipping market will be a yardstick to determine the industry¡¯s competitiveness.¡±
In his New Year¡¯s message, KSA Chairman Chung made the remarks. ¡°We soon have to face up to a mid, and long-term challenging task to find eco-friendly fuels to replace the conventional fuel in the wake of strengthening of maritime environment regulations.¡±
¡°KSA will concentrate its all capabilities on the sustainable development of the shipping industry and proactively comply with government steps to ramp up the competitiveness of the shipping industry to lead eco-friendly and digital transition.¡±
Chairman Chung stressed the establishment of order in the shipping industry, saying, ¡°KSA will aggressively represent the legality and suitability of joint activities by regular liners via administrative litigation, and malpractice report centers will be augmented to establish order of the sound shipping market.¡±
KSA will strengthen shared growth and collaboration among freight forwarding businesses, export production companies, shipping companies, freight owners and related industries and seek to expand long-term contracts with gas, crude oil, steel, power generation raw materials and other large-volume cargo owners.
Chairman Chung suggested other businesses, including the strengthening of financial support for the construction of eco-friendly ships, lowering of port facility fees and safety charges, cultivating marine technicians, promoting seamen¡¯s welfare and implementing public interest projects via a foundation.
¡°The environment surrounding the shipping industry is predicted to be not easy for the New Year, and if we fulfill our given missions and gather our wisdom and capabilities, it will be transferred into an opportunity,¡± he said.
Amid the widening of uncertainties of the global economy, caused by Russia¡¯s invasion of Ukraine, and U.S.-China tension, the United States¡¯ steep interest rate hikes designed to tame global inflation have weakened the economies of major countries, and there is a worry about the probability of the cooling down of the container market, seen from the second half of last year, due to rising availability of ships in the wake of the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic and ship shortage, he said.
Looking back at last year, he said Korean export companies suffered an unprecedented global logistics upheaval due to the worsening Korean and foreign transportation conditions, caused by international logistics glitches and quagmire and the spread of the pandemic.

Executive Vice Chairman Yang Chang-ho of the Korea Shipowners¡¯ Association (KSA) said, ¡°KSA will concentrate on easing pending issues with which the shipping industry faces and devote itself to contributing to the development of the national economy by making a leap forward as a shipping powerhouse.¡±
KSA Executive Vice Chairman Yang made the remarks as he took office at an inauguration ceremony, which coincided with KSA¡¯s national assembly at KSA headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on Jan. 12.
Among about 60 people on hand at the event were CEOs of shipping companies and Dir.-Gen. Yoon Hyun-soo of the Logistics Bureau at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Executive Vice Chairman Yang graduated from Daekwang High School and Yonsei University Biochemistry Department.
Yang, who entered KMI in 1983, climbed up the hierarchy to serve as president for three years stating from 2016. He also served as a professor with Graduate School of Logistics in Northeast Asia and special professor with Sungkyul University.
He also authored a book on the ¡°Understanding of the Maritime Economy, Logistics and SCM.¡±
KSA Wants Ex-MOF Minister Moon, Professor of World Maritime University, Elected WMU President
Korea Shipowners¡¯ Association (KSA) sent a letter to Secretary-General Lim Ki-taek of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), asking that former minister Moon Seong-hyeok, a professor at World Maritime University (WMU) be elected to WMU president.
The letter said former MOF minister Moon is a globally renowned scholar in the maritime and shipping sector and a seasoned expert with specialized knowledge and practices as a bureaucrat who served as former MOF minister for about three years from 2019.
