POSCO Group is implementing a project to capture and store carbon dioxide, being emitted from the operation of its steelworks into deleted petroleum and gas fields in Malaysia.
POSCO Holdings, the holding company of POSCO Group, in cooperation of POSCO E&C and POSCO International, signed a contract on a carbon capture and storage project using depleted petroleum and gas fields with Petros, a petroleum and gas company owned by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, at Sarawak state complex on Dec. 12.
Under the deal, POSCO Group and Petros agreed to conduct a feasibility study on a project to capture, transport and store the carbon dioxide, being discharged from the operation of POSCO steel mill and from the production of blue hydrogen, at depleted, offshore petroleum and gas fields off the state of Sarawak.
Both sides will form a working group to discuss details, ranging from carbon capture in Korea to transport to Sarawak, the construction of CCS infrastructure, carbon injection and storage.
Cho Joo-ik, head of POSCO Holdings¡¯ Hydrogen Project Division, said, ¡°Through this collaboration, POSCO Group will concentrate on its capability to accelerate carbon neutrality.¡±
¡°Now that collaboration between governments and companies is essential for the implementation of the CCS project, POSCO expects full support from the state government on cooperation with Petros, the state-run petroleum and gas company,¡± Cho said.
Anyi Ngau, chief of Petros Sarawak Resources Management Division, said, Sarawak has a geological structure suitable for carbon storage and the potential to implement CCS projects on a global scale, and Petros will aggressively carry out the CCS project under support by the state government.

POSCO A&C Becomes Preferred Negotiator of Nation¡¯s Biggest Modular Housing Project in Sejong 6-3 District
POSCO A&C, a subsidiary of POSCO E&C, has been selected as a preferred negotiator of the Sejong 6-3 life integration public rental project, the nation¡¯s biggest modular housing project, the company said on Nov. 7.
The project involves the construction of four seven-story buildings with a combined 416 housing units in the Sejong 6-3 life integration public rental district.
A consortium, led by Gye-ryong Construction Industrial, will implement the project, awarded by Korea Land & Housing Corp. (LH).
POSCO A&C, primarily specializing in one-room modular homes, produces and supply modular homes, such as ones on two-bay small-and medium-sized households and terraced house household types and stand surface design.
Modular homes are built in an off-site construction method in which 70 percent to 80 percent of materials, such as walls built with quake-proof steel structures, windows and doors, electric wires, pipelines, and bathrooms and kitchen furniture are assembled at off-site plants and put together on site.
Modular homes are evaluated to be innovative houses designed to overcome problems, such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste production, less production, manpower shortage, safety and quality issues.
President Chung Hoon of POSCO A&C said, ¡°POSCO Group is devoting itself to invigorating the modular home market, ranging from eco-friendly steel products for construction to expansion into the construction market.¡±
POSCO A&C will contribute to raising and invigorating Korea¡¯s modular architecture technology power by successfully assembling and supplying modular homes, complete with diverse modular technology and design at the Sejong 6-3 life integration public rental project by making the most of a track record of performing the ¡°Giga Town,¡± the nation¡¯s highest modular structure and steel product technology, President Chung added.
