Korea National Railway (KR) said on Nov. 28 that KR will next month embark on a project to double-track the 71.3 km-long Andong-Yeongcheon section, part of the Jungang Line, linking Dodam and Yeongcheon, whose double-tracked line will be opened to traffic in 2024.
The Dodam-Yeongcheon double-tracked line, measuring some 145.1 km, will cost 4,355.4 billion won.
The 73.9 km-long Dodam-Andong section and the 71.3 km-long Andong-Yeoncheon portion had been planned as a double-track and single-track, respectively.
But the planning of the latter changed to a double-track according to outcomes of a review of the suitability of the project, made last December.
Work on the trackbed of the Andong-Yeongcheon section is in the final stage. KR will next month launch work on the double-tracking of the portion, such as track, power, signal and communications, which will cost 280.4 billion won.

The whole Dodam-Yeongcheon section is scheduled to be opened to traffic as a double-tracked line in 2024.
When the project is completed, passengers traveling from Jaecheon to Yeongcheon will see their traveling time reduced to 54 minutes on a KTX-Eum train from two hours and 23 minutes on a Mugunghwa train.
It will raise the railway traffic frequency of the Andong-Yeongcheon section from 63 occasions to 189.
KR Chairman & CEO Kim Han-young said, ¡°If the double-tracking of the Andong-Yeongcheon section will raise its transportation capacity, the conventional transportation system focusing on the Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan) Line will be dualized into the Gyeongbu and Jungang axes, thus improving railway sharing rate.¡±
