Korea Expressway Corp. (KEC) asked for motorists utilizing expressways to be cautious over work site accidents, dozing off at the wheel and secondary accidents at this time of lower temperatures.
October and November are generally come with the largest number of shutting lanes to conduct maintenance and repair work, caused by summer downpours and typhoons.
Most of the accidents involving work sites on the expressways are attributable to dozing off at the wheel.
Figures released by KEC, showed that 82 percent of work site accidents were caused to dozing off at the wheel or failing to keep looking forward.
In particular, lower outside temperatures during the change of seasons come with a higher possibility of dangers related to dozing off at the wheel.
Motorists are more likely to feel tired while being at the wheel due to the declining quality of sleeping as the body adjusts to the change of seasons, and due to the rising density of CO2, caused by the rising use of heaters during nighttime and morning hours.
Motorists are advised to take a rest for more than 15 minutes at service areas or shelters in order to avoid sleeping after driving for two hours, to circulate the air by opening the windows frequently.
Motorists are also advised to slow down and change lanes in advance.
KEC also warned of to take precautions to avoid secondary accidents.
Secondary traffic accidents occur when cars involved in traffic accidents or breakdowns are hit by following cars, so casualties go up to 60.2 percent, which is equal to seven times more than those of general traffic accidents.
If and when cars are parked on the lanes of expressways or shoulders, motorists are advised to turn on emergency lights and open their trunks to notify of accidents to the following cars before escaping to safe areas outside the guardrails.
If and when assisting people involving accidents, motorists are required to secure their safety, the foremost thing.
KEC operates an emergency wrecker car service to prevent secondary traffic accidents.
Motorists of broken cars need to turn to the emergency wreck car service, which gives a free ride to the nearest tollgate, service area and shelter for prevention of dozing off at the wheel. Pl. call KEC¡¯s call center at 1588-2504.
