Samsung C&T Engineering and Construction Group will implement a mega solar project in Qatar. QatarEnergy is the client for this project, which will generate a total of 875 MW and will cover an area equivalent to 1,400 soccer fields.
The project has 417MW and 458MW solar plants, to be built in Mesaieed, about 40km south of the capital Doha, and in Ras Laffan, roughly 80km north of Doha respectively.
Samsung C&T E&C is the exclusive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor and will install 1.6 million solar panels.
Construction will begin in September 2022 and is expected to finish in November 2024. When complete, the plants will supply power to facilities in the industrial complex owned by QatarEnergy and Qatar¡¯s national electrical grid.
Samsung C&T Strengthens Its Green Construction Portfolio
This is not the first solar power construction project for Samsung C&T E&C Group. The company recently completed the construction of a 60-megawatt power plant and an energy storage system in Mangilao, Guam.
In addition to solar power plants, Samsung C&T is actively strengthening its portfolio of new eco-friendly businesses such as green hydrogen, ammonia, and small modular reactors (SMRs).
Through its increasing activity in these green business sectors, the Group is realizing its environmental, social, and governance management targets.
With the climate crisis and the growing importance of energy security, investment in green power infrastructure is increasing. Solar energy is one of the most important renewable energy resources.
In 2021, solar energy, together with wind, accounted for 10.3 percent of worldwide electrical generation.
In 2021, 168 Gigawatts of new photovoltaic capacity was installed, bringing total global solar energy capacity to above 1 Terawatt, double its 2018 level.
This figure is expected to more than double again by 2025 to 2.3 TW.
Samsung C&T Teams Up with POSCO E&C, POSCO A&C to Expand Global Modular Business
Samsung C&T Construction Group is joining forces with POSCO E&C and POSCO A&C to enter the global modular market.
Samsung C&T stroke an MOU on cooperation in the module business with POSCO E&C and POSCO A&C and they agreed to jointly enter the Korean and foreign modular markets by making the most of each company¡¯s capacities and strengths.
Present at a deal signing ceremony at Samsung C&T headquarters in Sangil-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, on Sept. 26 were Samsung C& T President Oh Se-chul, POSCO E&C President Han Sung-hee and POSCO A&C President Chung Hoon.
They agreed to cooperate and jointly implement business related to Korean and foreign modular sectors and conduct joint R&D to improve the quality of modular products.
Under the deal, the tree contractors decided to join forces to explore the global modular market, such as the Middle East. Globally, the modular market is predicted to grow about 9 percent annually by 2030.
A modular engineering method is characterized by technologies designed to make the most of off-site construction strengths and the greater curtailment of construction period with plant and on-site simultaneous work.
It has a strength to produce a uniform quality in a relative safe fashion with less on-site work and rising uniformed plant work.
Samsung C&T has successfully dedicated a second smart construction support center at Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, employing a modular engineering method, and the contractor is hitting the gas to develop core technologies to secure the quality of modular products.
Samsung C&T President Oh said, ¡°The deal is expected to serve as an opportunity to occupy the overseas large-sized module business, which is being expanded ahead of others.¡±
