CJ CheilJedang attended the 7th International Marine Debris Conference (7IMDC), the world’s longest-running international conference series dedicated to the issue of marine litter and plastic pollution, and showcased the unrivaled competitiveness of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs).
7IMDC took place at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), Busan from Sept. 19 to Sept. 23.
CJ CheilJedang showcased PHAs, a marine biodegradable material. It is produced by only a few companies in the world.
CJ highlighted the PHA’s environmental and industrial potential to environment policy officers and scholars from around the world.
Marine experts and environmental policy officers from over 50 countries showed great interest in PHAs, which are biodegradable and can be the solution to the issue of microplastics. PHAs are also highly valuable industrial materials with extensive usage.
They are not only used to make disposable products and cosmetics, but also containers for various consumer goods. One officer from a public marine agency said, “We have been searching for different solutions to prevent ocean pollution. “I’d like to promote PHAs as a material that will end the fight against marine debris.”
CJ CheilJedang, in particular, was the sole private company in the conference that had an opportunity to make a presentation on a specific topic.
During the presentation, CJ CheilJedang talked about reducing petrochemical plastics with biodegradable materials, including PHAs.
CJ has verified the safety of PHAs in terms of their impact on the environment and the ecosystem based on the competitiveness in R&D.
IMDC is the world’s most influential and longest running global conference dedicated to marine trash issues, having first started in 1984.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) organized the first six events in the US, but this year marked the first year in IMDC history to be held outside the US jointly organized by MOF and UNEP.

CJ ENM Hosts ‘KCON 2022 Saudi Arabia’
K-CON, World’s No.1 K-culture festival, continued to gather fans around the world with KCON 2022 Saudi Arabia, followed by KCON 2022 LA, which saw with 7.2 million K-pop fans both online and offline.
CJ ENM hosted “KCON 2022 Saudi Arabia” at the Boulevard Riyadh City, the largest entertainment complex located in the capital of Saudi Arabia, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1. This was the first KCON held in Saudi Arabia.
Half of Saudi Arabia’s population is under the age of 30, among whom K-pop is especially popular.
The Saudi Arabian government has selected Korea as one of its strategic partners for Saudi Vision 2030, which it presented as part of its roadmap to foster high value-added industries, such as culture and tourism.
Because of its ideal geographical location, which connects Asia, Africa, and Europe, the country is capable of offering K-culture with an opportunity for it to spread to neighboring continents that speak different languages.
As such, CJ ENM chose Saudi Arabia as a new KCON destination, thanks to the country’s Millennials and Gen Z-led high interest in K-culture, the government-led efforts to foster the culture industry, and the geographical advantage that connects the country to Africa and Europe.
CJ ENM also signed an MOU with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture in June as a means to promote cultural exchanges in various fields, such as music, film, and cultural heritage.
