The Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) said on Aug. 26 the authority saw cargo volumes surge to 18.65 million tons in July, a 14.1 percent jump over the same period of the previous year.
The latest figure is the second-highest ever. It is the highest level since the spread of the COVID pandemic. UPA posted a record 18.8 million tons in October 2018.
Amid rising shipment of refinery companies¡¯ imports and exports in July, coupled with strong refining margins, the port saw liquid cargo volumes jump 16.9 percent that month year-on-year to 15.41 million tons, general cargo volumes increased 2.4 percent year-on-year to 3.243 million tons and container cargo volumes declined 22.2 percent year-on-year to 33,000 TEU.
Rising cargo volumes were attributed to the expansion of temporary ship port calls, attracting new import cargo volumes, and the spurring of the operation of a new tank terminal and rising exporting of eco-friendly cars through aggressive marketing and port sales activities by UPA, the operator of the port.
UPA Senior Executive Vice President Chung Chang-gyu said, ¡°Thanks to our aggressive activities to ease grievances and complaints customers experience, Ulsan Port logged the highest cargo volumes in July since the spread of the COVID pandemic and the second highest-ever monthly one.¡±
UPA will redouble marketing activities amid expanding external and internal uncertainties, such as fears of H2 economic sluggishness and expand the port¡¯s cargo volumes through customer-oriented operation of the port, Chung said.
Officials of the Ulsan Port Authority (UPA), including President Kim Jae-gyun, pose with officials of Evergreen Korea, including President Johnny Lee at a CEO port sales meeting at Ulsan Marine Center on Aug. 17.
