The Korean government and the private sector have kicked efforts into full gear to attract 2030 Expo to Busan.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and Chairman Chey Tae-won of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) jointly convened the second meeting of the Committee for Attracting 2030 Expo to Busan at Seoul Four Seasons Hotel on Aug. 26, where they finalized a strategy to attract the 2030 Expo and have Busan¡¯s competitiveness known to the world.
Among those on hand at the meeting were 28 members of the committee, including Prime Minister Han, KCCI Chairman Chey, Foreign Minister Park Jin, Minister Lee Sang-min of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), Samsung Electronics President Lee In-yong and President Lee Hyung-hee of SK Social Value Committee.
A Korean government delegation is to submit to the BIE secretariat in Paris on Sept. 7 the plan to attract the 2030 Expo to Busan, approved during the meeting.

The expo¡¯s candidate countries are scheduled to make a 3rd presentation in November, undergo a fact-finding inspection next March, and make a fourth presentation in June 2023 and a fifth presentation in November 2023, respectively.
The venue of the 2030 Expo will be decided by voting by BIE member countries around November 2023.
The Korean government and companies are to conduct activities as ¡°Korea One Team¡± with the Committee for Attracting 2030 Expo to Busan taking the initiative in the bid, according to major timetable related to BIE until next November when the venue is to be confirmed.
The committee inaugurated a non-standing special advisor responsible for overseeing activities to attract the Expo, to build a pivot of external negotiations, and commissioned former ambassador Choi Kyung-lim as special advisor.
Choi is a seasoned economic diplomacy expert. He held major positions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), including MOFA¡¯s FTA chief negotiator and MOTIE deputy minister in charge of trade and ex-ambassador to Geneva.
He had diverse negotiations experiences such as Korea-U.S. FTA negotiations and chair of the U.N. Human Rights Council.
Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Han said, ¡°Rival countries are expected to ramp up competition to attract the Expo after their bid plans are submitted in September.¡± He stressed strategic responses to implement external negotiation activities.
KCCI Chairman Chey said, ¡°We¡¯re conducting activities targeting 129 member countries to attract the Expo, and more efforts will be made on a negotiation front by expanding the private sector¡¯s support committee, which has accumulated knowhow.¡±

Starting with the first meeting on July 8, 2022, the government and companies have jointly operated the committee to attract the Expo to Busan.
The committee, jointly headed by Prime Minister Han and KCCI Chairman Chey, is manned by 14 government ministers, Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jay-yong, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Eui-sun, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin and CJ Group Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik.
MOTIE said on Sept. 4 a Korean delegation, headed by 1st MOTIE Vice Minister Jang Young-jin was visiting France from Sept. 5 to Sept. 8 to submit to the BIE Secretariat based in Paris a plan to attract the Expo to Busan.
The delegates include Busan Mayor Park, Kim Yoon-il, presidential secretary for future policy, and a director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
The delegation was to meet with the BIE sectary general after submitting the bid plan.
With the submitting the bid plan, the government plans to conduct full-fledged multi-lateral and bilateral negotiations targeting major negotiation countries.

CJ ENM has shown videos to promote Busan¡¯s bid to attract the 2030 Expo via its own channels, including tvN, Mnet and OCN since July 25. Starting with KCON LA, the company has begun to expand its activities to support Busan¡¯s bid to attract the Expo abroad.
