SK ecoplant, concentrating on R&D to upgrade its environment businesses, is embarking on the development of new technologies related to the treating of high-density waste water that cannot be decomposed by microorganisms.

SK ecoplant struck an MOU on the joint development of new technologies related to the smart electrochemical oxidation (ECO) method to treat high-density waste water with Michigan Technology at the former¡¯s office in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on Aug. 18.

Among those on hand at the event were President Kim Byung-kwon of SK ecoplant¡¯s Eco Lab Center and President Lee Byung-ho of Michigan Technology, and officials from both companies.

Michigan Technology is an environment company specializing in the waste water treatment technology sector, established in 2002.

The company is evaluated to have a competitive edge with related technologies and expertise it has accumulated for about 20 years since its establishment.

Under the deal, both companies will join forces in joint efforts to develop and verify new technologies related to an electrochemical oxidation system using boron dropped diamond electrodes to treat high-density waste water.

High-density waste water, such as industrial waste water, landfill site leachate are not disrupted by microorganisms.

Large amounts of chemical agents and a physiochemical process of heating waste water with fossil fuels and evaporating it to collect clean water have been employed to treat high-density waste water. But secondary pollution caused large amounts of sludge, have become challenging issues.

SK ecoplant and Michigan Technology are embarking on the development of new technologies to treat waste water in an electrochemical oxidation process using an electrode.

It involves a principle of exchanging electrons between the electrode and waste water when power flows into the former.

Unlike the conventional methods, the new method undergoes two processes of purifying. Hydroxyl radical being produced from a negative electrode is involved in decomposing of polluted particles in waste water.

Hypochlorous acid, which is produced when water is combined with chlorine, a pollutant in waste water, purifies organic matters. Ultimately, it is an advanced waste water treatment solution to bring about only water.

The boron-coated diamond electrode used in the upcoming research is a G3 electrode with greater purification and durability.

The electrochemical waste water treatment technology has been praised in terms of pollutant removal efficiency and economic feasibility, but there is no example of verifying the technology in Korea.

Under the agreement, the two companies decided to build an ECO equipment utilizing a BDD electrode in the nation¡¯s first site verification scale.

In reality, outcomes of a short-term test into landfill leachate treatment centers owned by SK ecoplant showed that the technology proved to have reduced operation costs by about 80 percent.

Both sides are expected to continue testing the electrode¡¯s durability and efficiency through one year of continued operational verification.

Michigan Technology is responsible for the installation and operation of an equipment related to the ECO waste water treatment technology and testing its efficiency.

SK ecoplant oversees the joint technology development. The company is charged with exploring optimal operation conditions by comprehensively looking into testing results.

SK ecoplant has released its premium housing brand ¡°DEFINE¡± on Aug. 11.

SK ecoplant Release Premium Housing Brand ¡®DEFINE¡¯

SK ecoplant announced the official release of its premium housing brand ¡°DEFINE¡± on Aug. 11. The release of the new brand comes 22 years after the housing brand ¡°SK View¡± made its debut in 2000.

¡°DEFINE,¡± a combination of ¡°DE,¡± a prefix ¡°emphasizing¡±, and ¡°FINE,¡± a word for meaning goodness and purity, connotes the meaning of the best values corresponding to the times as new housing standards.

The logo of ¡°DEFINE¡± adds the meaning of building new premium levels, tearing down the conventional housing stereotypes of time and space.
