Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) held a ceremony to launch Jeongjo The Great, the lead ship of the KDX-III AEGIS destroyer project for the Navy, at HHI headquarters in Ulsan on July 28.
Among those on hand at the event were President Yoon Suk-yeol, First Lady Kim Keon-hee, Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Lee Jong-ho, Administrator Eom Dong-hwan of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Chairman Kwon Oh-gap of HD Hyundai and HHI, Vice Chairman Han Yeong-seok, President Chung Ki-sun and President Lee Sang-kyun.
The ship is named King Jeongjo The Great after King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon Dynasty, who contributed to a cultural resurgence and building national prosperity and military power in the late dynasty.
King Jeongjo The Great is the Navy¡¯s first next-generation Aegis destroyer. The ship, measuring 170 meters long, 21 meters wide and 8,200 tons in light displacement, can navigate at the maximum speed of 30 knots (55km/h).
The ship is outfitted with the latest Aegis Combat System, characterized by improved antiballistic missile response and antiship operation capabilities, compared to the existing King Sejong The Great (7,600 ton).
The destroyer, newly installed with a system to intercept ballistic missiles, is evaluated to be a destroyer capable of possessing strong combat capabilities with diverse weapon systems, such as 5-inch guns, a close-in weapon system, ship-to-air missiles, ship-to-ship missiles and torpedoes.
The latest destroyer has capabilities of detecting and tracking two times better than King Sejong the Great and has submarine detecting capabilities that are three-times better.
HHI built Korea¡¯s first Aegis destroyer, King Sejong The Great, in 2008, and ¡°Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong,¡± the nation¡¯s third Aegis destroyer, in 2012.
The shipbuilder is to deliver King Jeongjo The Great in 2024 and the 8,200-ton Aegis second destroyer in 2026 to the Navy.

In his speech, President Yoon said, ¡°We have now become capable of building a world-class Aegis destroyer with our own technologies.¡±
HHI Vice Chairman Han said, ¡°HHI is the nation¡¯s sole shipyard to design and build an Aegis destroyer with its own capabilities, and King Jeongjo The Great is built as the existing top-level Aegis destroyer, contributing to strengthening our Navy¡¯s combat capabilities.¡±

Hyundai Heavy Industries'' Engine Machinery has built the world¡¯s first low-pressure dual-fuel engine (ME-GA) in cooperation of MAN Energy Solutions, to be placed at LNG-fueled ships.
The step is designed to achieve unmatched leadership in the LNG-fueled ship market, emerging as a next-generation mainstay one.
According to industry sources, Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine Machinery Division produced the world¡¯s first ME-GA for LNG-fueled ships in cooperation with MAN Energy Solutions.
The 19,000 horsepower engine is test-operated under the scrutiny of the Llyod¡¯s Register. It is capable of choosing LNG and diesel.
HD Hyundai Posts 1,235.9 Billion Won in Q2 Operating Profit, 569.5 Percent Year-On Jump
In an electronic filing issued on July 29, HD Hyundai, the holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, said it logged 15,754 billion won and 1,235.9 billion won in sales and operating profit in the second quarter of the year on a consolidated basis, respectively.
The figures represent a 149.9 percent surge and a 569.5 percent jump year-on-year, respectively. HD Hyundai saw net profit soar 4,292 percent year-on-year to 957.5 billion won.
