Shinhan Bank announced on July 8 that it reopened the Korea Financial History Museum and the Memorial Hall for Koreans in Japan in Gwanghwamun, Jung-gu, Seoul in commemoration of its 40th anniversary.
The Korea Financial History Museum is the first museum of financial history established in Korea. The museum was renovated after Hansung Bank, Korea¡¯s first bank founded in 1897.
On the third floor of the museum is money from the Three Kingdoms Period to the 1970s, historical records and relics of the Government Bond Compensation Movement registered as a UNESCO world heritage.
Visitors can learn about the development of the Korean financial industry from the 1980s to the present on the fourth floor.
On exhibit are Korea's first unmanned bank branch, an unmanned night deposit box in the 80s for customers who had difficulty using it during business hours, and a modern non-face-to-face banking system.
In particular, the museum has a special window for the artifact repository that only curators can enter, but the window enables visitors to see various artifacts in the artifact repository through the window.
The Memorial Hall for Koreans in Japan is located on the fifth floor of the building. The hall shows the lives and activities of Koreans who devoted themselves to the economic growth of the Republic of Korea, through various records, videos, and AR devices among others.
The life story of the late honorary Shinhan chairman Lee Hee-gun, founder of Shinhan Bank, was produced in a six-part animation film to tell patriotic stories of Koreans in Japan.
The Korea Financial History Museum and the Memorial Hall for Koreans in Japan welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.
Audio guides using QR codes allow visitors to listen to overall explanations about the museum. The museum also offers various financial education programs such as financial history education for elementary school students and family programs where parents and children can easily learn savings, banking and finance together.
¡°I am happy to take part in the opening ceremony for the museum and the memorial hall on our bank¡¯s 40th anniversary,¡± said Jin Ok-dong, president of Shinhan Bank.
¡°I hope that the museum and the memorial hall will offer good opportunities for many people to learn the history of Korean finance.¡±

Shinhan Bank said that the bank participated in an event by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to help the digitally marginalized, those suffering from inconvenience in their daily lives due to rapid changes in the digital environment, on July 12.
Through the event supporting the digitally marginalized, the Seoul Metropolitan Government checked the current situation and found a direction to move forward with various institutions and companies, including the formation of a digital competency council and the initiation of a campaign for citizens to create a culture to take care of the digitally marginalized.
Shinhan Bank and the Seoul Metropolitan Government plan to minimize their inconvenience by establishing effective financial consumer protection policies and promoting financial education to enhance senior citizens¡¯ digital adaptability and financial accessibility.
In particular, Shinhan Bank make an improvement to its digital and unmanned services by making ATMs show large letters, use easy financial terms, and slow down the speed of their voice guidance for the digitally marginalized in November last year, and expand such services to various devices used in banks such as utility bill machines.
Moreover, Shinhan Bank will hold a campaign to emphasize consideration for customers who have difficulty using digital devices and unmanned machines until the end of the year in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, organizations, and companies.
¡°Support for digital inclusion should start with empathy,¡± Shinhan Bank President Jin said. ¡°We will do everything we can do to create a financial environment where anyone can easily use digital devices and unmanned machines.¡±
