Hyundai Motor IONIQ 5 has ranked No. 1 in Germany, beating the Tesla Model Y and Porsche 911 Carrera GTS models.

Hyundai’s all-electric midsize CUV IONIQ 5 defeated not only German juggernaut brands, including Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and Porsche, it also beat out the EV mega-brand Tesla.

Hyundai Motor said on March 28 that IONIQ 5 was selected as the car with the most competitive edge in the German auto magazine Auto Bild’s evaluation of EVs.

The automaker powerhouse may be considered as major guidelines for both German and European consumers.

The comparative evaluation, carried out in the latest edition of the Auto Bild, was made on IONIQ 5, Audi Q4 e-tron and Polestar 2, the three models that square off fiercely in the European EV market.

It was conducted for seven evaluation categories, including body, powertrain, comport, connectivity, and eco-friendliness.

IONIQ 5 topped the four categories – body, powertrain, comport and eco-friendliness. The Korean brand got 573 points overall, beating 565 points for Q4 e-tron and 553 points for Polestar 2.

IONIQ 5 ranked 1st for the 3rd time, following earlier evaluations comparing Volkswagen ID4 and Benz EQB, proving its excellent marketability once again.

Auto Bild said IONIQ 5 does not require much power to accelerate up to 185 kilometers per hour, thanks to its powerful but quiet acceleration performance, and also praised the carmaker’s i-Pedal, or one-pedal driving, which works by applying the brakes as soon as one lifts one’s foot off the pedal.

IONIQ 5 also defeated Benz EV EQB in a comparative EV evaluation, carried in the ninth edition of Auto Bild in early March.

Auto Bild conducted the one-on-one evaluation in seven categories, including body, comport, powertrain and driving dynamics, connected car, environment and costs and 53 detailed categories.

IONIQ 5 got 582 out of the possible 800 points overall, compared to 562 points for Benz EQB. IONIQ 5 beat or equaled Benz EQB in five categories, excluding comfort and connected car.

The Korean brand beat German premium brands in performance and technology evaluations, except the price competitiveness, the strength of the non-European brands. Auto Bild selected IONIQ 5 as the top import car in the EV category in early this year.

IONIQ 5 was selected as the Car of the Year in Germany last November. A screening panel consisted of auto reporters activating in Germany. The panel evaluated 45 new models released in Germany.

IONIQ 5 outbid finalists such as Peugeot 308, Kia EV6, Audi e-tron, and Porsche 911 GT3. The panelists selected IONIQ 5 as the “Car of the Year” in the new energy sector last year, beating BMW iX and Benz EQS.

It was owed to the Korean brand’s good reception in futuristic design, reasonable price and innovative charging technology.

IONIQ 5 ranked 1st in an evaluation of five SUV EV models by Auto Zeitung, one of Germany’s top three auto magazines, in February.
