Korea Railway Research Institute (KRRI) held an online and off-line international seminar on global leadership strategies related to the mega brand K-railway transportation technologies, in celebration of its 26th anniversary, at COEX in Samseong-dong, Seoul, on Feb. 24.
The seminar focused on how to explore strategies on leading technologies to move toward the global railway market beyond the domestic market.
KRRI President Han Seok-youn said, ¡°As countries around the world are scrambling with numerous studies and technology development to secure future technologies, the Korean railroad industry is required to develop innovative technologies, and KRRI will strive to develop breakthrough railroad technologies such as high-tech, digitalization that will have across-the-board impact on society.¡±

Dir.-Gen. Kang Hee-up of the Railroad Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) participated in the seminar and congratulated KRRI on the holding of the seminar and the occasion of its 26th anniversary.
In his video message, MOLIT Vice Minister Hwang Sung-gyu said, ¡°It is necessary to develop advanced transportation technologies so the Korean railroad can be beloved as a fast, safe, eco-friendly transportation means in the 4th Industrial Revolution.¡±
He said the seminar served as an opportunity to establish global strategies of K-railroad transportation technologies.
Dir.-Gen. Kang of MOTIE gave a lecture titled ¡°Ways of Implementing Railway Policies to Ramp Up the Competitiveness of the Railroad Industry.¡± The takeaway was the need for a continued discussion for sustainable development of the railroad industry.
Dir.-Gen. Kang said, ¡°The Korean railroad industry had a few cases of entering the foreign market, but they were related to construction projects or project management services, not advanced technologies.¡±
Kang proposed policies to strengthen industrial technology power and expand overseas market entry.
First of all, Kang emphasized the necessity of an industry cluster to strengthen railroad industry technologies in the infrastructure sector.
He said the virtual cycle of industry like long-term package contracts will allow operators to supply parts on a stable fashion and parts makers to focus on production and R&D.
Kang stressed the importance of railroad-oriented mass transportation means to achieve carbon neutrality. He spoke about the implementation of railroad as a service (RaaS) and building a railroad-based connectivity transportation transfer system.
He talked about the application of hydrogen fuel battery hybrid power system to replace diesel vehicles and railroad facilities outfitted with carbon neutral technologies.
The mega brand K-railroad technologies, designated by KRRI, were demonstrated. They attracted keen attention from participants of the seminar.
Sagong Myung, head of the Research Strategy Division at KRRI, spoke about global leadership action strategies of the mega brand K-railroad transportation technologies.
The mega brand K-railroad transportation technologies, disclosed by Sagong, refer to value-added railroad transportation technologies such as ones connected with the 4th Industrial Revolution and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can have a competitive edge in the global market.
As for ways of entering foreign markets, Sagong called for easing market entry barriers for conventional technologies, exploring promising markets and developing technologies for localization.
He demanded the creation of global new markets by globally standardizing through domestic verification of leading technologies and securing an upper hand.
Carlo Borghini, executive director of Europe¡¯s Rail, gave a lecture on the topic ¡°Toward a Climate-neutral Society: The Transformation of European Rail.¡±
Jana Pieriegud, a transport economist with R&D, market intelligence with SGH Warsaw School of Economics, spoke about the topic ¡°Europe¡¯s Digital Transformation Strategy and Its Progress in the Railway Market.¡±
