KOWEPO Enters European Photovoltaic Power Generation Market
Launches Rosa Photovoltaic Power Plant Project in Spain

Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) is participating in a project to build photovoltaic power plants in Spain. It is KOWEPO¡¯s first photovoltaic power generation project in Europe and the third on the continent, following two wind power projects being undertaken in Sweden and Finland.

KOWEPO held a board of directors meeting last Dec. 23 and gave the go-ahead to the project.

In October 2020, KOWEPO and Hanwha Solution struck an MOU on the joint development of the photovoltaic power plants. Both sides have jointly undertaken licenses & permits, project financing, and power purchase agreements.

The Rosa Photovoltaic Power Project calls for constructing a 52.4MW photovoltaic power plant in Seville and a 104.8MW photovoltaic power plant in Cordoba, both in Andalusia, Spain. The project will be dedicated by November 2023.

Hanwha Solution will be charged with procuring raw materials and systems, as well as installation, plus a two-year guarantee against defects. KOWEPO will be responsible for the operation of the plants for 28 years, between 2025 and 2053.

The size of the two plant sites, covering about 3.83 million sq. meters, is equal to the size of 500 soccer stadiums. The two plants will produce enough electricity to supply about 70,000 households monthly.

The project is the largest-ever single photovoltaic power generation project being implemented by a Korean public entity in Europe.

KOWEPO¡¯s participation in the latest photovoltaic power project will enable the power company to participate in all stages of development, constructing and operating renewal energy power generation plants.

In particular, the power company has successfully landed the latest project after tackling stages of operation and construction before developing in a ¡°reverse three-stage process,¡± a new approach to overcome lack of experiences related to power generation in Europe.

KOWEPO has accumulated experience and expertise in the sector by participating in the operation and construction of wind power farms in Finland in June 2020 and in Sweden in March 2021.

KOWEPO President Park Hyung-duk said, ¡°The project is an exemplary case of exporting Korean-type photovoltaic power packages by the Korean public power entity and financial entities.¡±

KOWEPO will do its utmost to enter foreign markets in cooperation with Korean companies in the future, he added.

KOWEPO Teams Up with KICET in Development of Hydrogen Power Generation Technology

Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) struck an MOU on the developing hydrogen enriched gas turbine technology with Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology (KICET) at KICET headquarters in Jinju on Jan. 12.

The two institutions agreed to cooperate in the development of diverse technologies, such as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) power for hydrogen enriched gas turbine and hydrogen gas turbine and core parts of solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) for three years to spearhead the hydrogen economy.

Hydrogen enriched gas turbine is an eco-friendly power generation technology operating gas turbines using a combination of liquefied natural gas and hydrogen.

KOWEPO plans to raise the portion of hydrogen over stages to realize carbon neutrality — ultimately goal of generating power 100 percent of hydrogen. Essential for this goal is a thermal barrier coating technology.
