Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) has reinforced life waste dumping amount reductions effective Jan. 1. SLC will reduce total life waste dumping amounts to 578,907 tons this year, an 18 percent drop from 705,985 tons in 2018.

SLC has allocated the cap on life waste dumping amounts for Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi-do at 251,100 tons, 87,648 tons and 240,159 tons, respectively.

The measure is designed to cut down on life waste acceptance amounts for the purpose of the effective use of Sudokwon Landfill Site 3-1 Zone.

The step was introduced in 2020 in accordance with a decision to ban the dumping of life waste into the landfill site from 2026.

SLC has reduced life waste dumping amounts in keeping with the upcoming ban.

SLC¡¯s allocation of life waste dumping amounts has changed into a method in which the three city and provincial governments determine allocated amounts through consultation with lower local governments.

Penalties imposed on the excess of the cap have been also reinforced. SLC has revised the penalty rate on the excess amounts upward to between 120 percent and 200 percent this year from the previous rate of 120 percent-150 percent, but the period for stopping dumping has remained unchanged to between five days and 10 days.

An SLC official said SLC decided to reduce total life waste dumping amounts by 3 percentage points over the previous year despite the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic through consultation among the Environment Ministry and the three municipal and provincial governments.

With not much time prior to the enforcement of the ban on life waste dumping in 2026, it is imperative for local governments to accelerate efforts to expand incinerating facilities on top of life waste reductions on the part of residents, the official said.

Thirty-three local autonomous bodies found to be in excess of their allocated life waste amounts as of last Dec. 25.

The figure represented an about 23 percent drop from 43 entities in excess of the cap in 2020.

SLC¡¯s 50MW power facility using landfill gases generates 4,390,000 MWh of power, contributing to carbon neutrality.

SLC Tops Evaluation of Waste Treatment Facilities for 4 Years in Row

Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corp. (SLC) topped the 2021 evaluation of the operation of waste treatment facilities across the nation by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) for the fourth consecutive year on Jan. 3.

SLC¡¯s 3rd landfill site was rated highly in eco-friendliness and economical categories for installing landfill gas capture facilities, contributing to reducing surface landfill gas emissions by 4 percent over the previous year, and yielding 560 million won in revenues by supplying captured landfill gases to a 50MW power generation facility.

SLC¡¯s leachate treatment center ranked 1st in the category of bio-gasification facilities using organic waste. It was given higher points in terms of an economical index by saving about 710 million won in a budget annually by using biogas from the treating of food waste as a dry heat fuel.

SLC President Shin Chang-hyun said the world was interested in the nation¡¯s first facility to take its cue from it.

SLC will spearhead the establishment of a society of resources circulation and carbon neutrality by operating the Sudokwon Landfill Site in an efficient and stable fashion, he added.
