Samsung C&T Landed a 3.5 trillion won power transmission project from the United Arab Emirates.

Samsung C&T Construction Group has struck an EPC deal to build high-voltage direct current networks connecting the United Arab Emirates¡¯ offshore oil production facilities and Abu Dhabi¡¯s land power grid, the contractor said on Dec. 23.

The project calls for building power converting stations in two overland sites near Abu Dhabi and on two islands with offshore oil field facilities, as well as 1,000MW and 600MW submarine transmission networks that stretch 137 km and 122 km from the shore, respectively.

Samsung C&T said it would form a consortium with Belgian construction company Jan De Nul to implement the engineering, procurement and construction project.

The total cost of the project is worth 3.5 trillion won ($3 billion). Samsung C&T¡¯s portion of the cost stands at $2.27 billion (2.7 trillion won).

It is designed to stabilize the power supply to the existing offshore crude oil production facilities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is UAE¡¯s first HVDC project, awarded by Abu Dhabi National Oil.

The project takes a BOT format in which a consortium consisting of Korea Electric Power Corp., Kyushu Electric Power of Japan and EDF of France is selected as partners with a 40 percent stake in a special purpose company.

They will be in charge of the operation for a given period before ownership is transferred. Samsung C&T has a track record of having implemented a number of power generation projects and construction of substations in the UAE.

Beginning with the Al Shuweihat S2 combined thermal power project, the company took part in four power generation facility projects in the UAE, including the Barakah nuclear power plant, the second phase of Emal combined thermal power plant and Fujairah F3 combined thermal power plant.

Samsung C&T¡¯s greater understanding of the characteristics of local power networks and profound networking with local customers were contributing positively to the contractor¡¯s winning the project, a Korean contractor official said.

The officials said Samsung C&T plans to participate in the UAE¡¯s power transmission projects connected with renewable energy power generation and state power grid projects.

¡°With the new order, we will be expanding business to HVDC linked to construction of power plants and substations,¡± a Samsung C&T official said.

The latest project brings Samsung C&T¡¯s cumulative order intake in the construction sector to 12.5 trillion won this year, exceeding its annual target of 10.6 trillion won.

Samsung C&T won overseas orders worth more than 7 trillion won this year.

Earlier this year, Samsung C&T won a 1.85 trillion-won deal to build a liquefied natural gas export base in Qatar; a 1.24 trillion-won project to build a terminal at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport; and a 500-billion-won order to build a section of Singapore¡¯s metro system.

In Korea, the contractor has won contracts in a number of residential projects, including the Dogok Samho Reconstruction Project in Dogok-dong, in Seoul¡¯s Gangnam-gu, and the Myeongryun 2 Reconstruction Project in Dongnae-gu, Busan.

Samsung C&T was also selected as a contractor for the remodeling project of Anam Apartment in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu.

In addition, in a consortium together with Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Samsung C&T successfully bid for the right to remodel Kumho Byeoksan Apartment in Seongdong-gu, in east Seoul.

Going forward, Samsung C&T E&C will continue to deliver top-quality construction projects based on its technological expertise and experience.

Improving Safety of Construction Sites

One of the biggest issues at construction sites remains safety, and Samsung C&T E&C Group is continuing to come up with measures to prevent safety-related accidents.

An example of that is stop-work authority: the contractor declared in March that it would completely guarantee the authority of workers to cease work when there are safety matters that require attention and over the next six months a total of 2,175 work suspensions were carried out for safety reasons.

Samsung C&T E&C Group will continue to make efforts to establish a safety culture that empowers workers to ensure their own safety.

To reduce the risk to human workers, robot technology is now used for some dangerous tasks at construction sites.

For example, Samsung C&T E&C Group now replaces fireproofing on steel pillars and support beams in buildings, a job classified as high-risk, using robots.
