CJ Cheiljedang Comes Up with Long-Term Roadmap to Realize Carbon Neutrality by 2050

CJ Cheiljedang’s mid- and long-term roadmap for carbon neutrality targeting 2050.

CJ Cheiljedang declared the realization of carbon neutrality and zero waste, and established a roadmap with mid- and long-term goals and strategies targeting 2030, the company said on Dec. 22.

CJ Cheiljedang became the industry’s first company to publish a report on its response to climate change.

In an email message sent on that day, titled “CJ Cheiljedang’s Promise to Overcome Climate Change,” President Choi Eun-seok of CJ Cheiljedang said, “It is a declaration of detailed actions designed to lead sustainable lives of our society by minimizing negative impacts on the environment in all business areas, not ending up simple slogans.”

The move may be construed as CJ Group’s expression of its intention to aggressively implement sustainability, one of the group’s four growth engines, by ramping up ESG management through the realization of the mid- and long carbon neutrality plan.

The mid- and long-term core strategies designed to realize carbon neutrality and zero waste by 2050 are decarbonization energy paradigm shift of worksites, eco-friendly innovation of products and solutions, and the establishment of green partnerships in overall value chains among supply chains and cooperative companies.

The company plans to achieve 12 detailed goals in each category - greenhouse gas, energy, water and waste - based on the three core strategies.

CJ Cheiljedang decided to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of all worksites by 25 percent by 2030, compared to 2020 levels.

The company plans to fully replace fossil fuels for European operations with renewable and bio energies by 2030, and in the Asian region by 2050.

CJ Cheiljedang is pushing to raise the efficiency of water use. It also wants to discharge no waste.

The company plans to reduce the use of water in its operations in China and Indonesia by 10 percent to 20 percent by investing in water reduction facilities. It plans to halve food losses and waste by expanding donations and food reuse.

CJ Cheiljedang also plans to expand the development of eco-friendly products and solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The company plans to expand the release of products using the biodegradable material PHA, alternative meats and foods on cultured meats and release eco-friendly foods such as upcycling food.

The company plans to evaluate the environmental impact on the whole lifecycle of major products and reduce its carbon footprint by forming an organic cooperation regime among supply chain and cooperative companies.

It decided to introduce an in-house carbon price indexing system to conduct a feasibility study of reflecting potential carbon costs in the course of investing.

CJ Cheiljedang Enters Vegan Business by Releasing New Brand ‘Plantable’

CJ Cheiljedang said on Dec. 19 that the company was releasing its new vegetable food brand “Plantable” and entering the vegetable food business in the wake of the global mega trend of veganism.

The company plans to capitalize on the global K-food trend by making the most of vegan foods.

The first items released under the brand “Plantable” are mandu (Korean dumpling) and kimchi products, made with 100 percent vegetables, certified as vegan.

The mandu, put on the Korean market. is named “Bibigo Plantable Wanggyoja,” which has two versions: original and kimchi taste.
