Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Business Group is accelerating to efforts to develop an off-shore green hydrogen plant to secure an upper hand in the new market in an era of carbon neutrality.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of HHI Group struck an MOU on the establishment of guidelines for the design of offshore green hydrogen plants with U.S. classification society ABS at ABS Korea¡¯s branch on Nov. 23.

Among those on hand at the signing ceremony were Joo Won-ho, head of HHI¡¯s technology division, Kim Sung-joon, president of KSOE¡¯s Future Technology Research Institute and Darren Leskoski, director for Far East Asia.

As of late, global concern over carbon neutrality is on the rise, and hydrogen has emerged as an alternative energy source to realize carbon neutrality.

Green hydrogen is produced by wind power and photovoltaic power and other renewable energies through the electrolysis of seawater, but it discharges no greenhouse gas emissions.

An Offshore green hydrogen plant is a facility designed to produced large amounts of hydrogen through the electrolysis of seawater by electricity from offshore wind power plants.

In May, HHI signed an MOU to build a floating facility, coupled with a 100MW, floating wind power plant to verify the production of green hydrogen with Korea National Oil Corp. (KNOC). HHI is implementing its first 100MW wind power project to verify green hydrogen production.

Under the deal, HHI Group and ABS will establish guidelines on water electrolysis process flow, the definition of related utilities and regulations on safety. It is the first time globally such guidelines will be established.

To this end, HHI Group will be charged with the concept of offshore green hydrogen plants and basic design while ABS will be responsible for evaluating danger decrees, the design of materials and how to conduct maintenance & repair. HHI plans to obtain a basic certification on the guidelines.

An HHI official said, ¡°With the establishment of guidelines of the design of offshore green hydrogen plants, we will lead the future carbon neutrality market by spearheading international standards and the direction of the offshore green hydrogen sector.¡±

Meanwhile, in March, HHI Group announced ¡°Hydrogen Dream 2030 Roadmap, a hydrogen business vision of establishing hydrogen value chain, ranging from hydrogen product on land and offshore to transportation, storage and utilization.¡±

HHI Group launched a lecture on safety to about 330 executives and department heads with worksites in the Ulsan area such as HHI, Hyundai Mipo Shipyard and HHI MOS from Dec. 4.

Managers with HHI Group Committed of Ensuring Safety to Prevent Disasters

HHI Group began to give a lecture on safety to about 330 executives and department heads with worksites in the Ulsan area such as HHI, Hyundai Mipo Shipyard and HHI MOS from Dec. 4.

About 50 people, including HHI Vice Chairman Han Young-suk, President Lee Sang-gyun and President Shin Hyun-tae of Hyundai Mipo Shipyard, participated in the Day 1 workshop and field practical training.
