The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said it delivered a non-face-to-face presentation to bid for the 2030 World Expo at the 169th General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on Dec. 14.
BIE is an intergovernmental organization created to supervise international exhibitions falling under the jurisdiction of the Convention Relating to International Exhibitions.
Five countries which made their bid before the application deadline on Oct. 29 came together. Korea was the first country to make its presentation among the bidders, which also included Italy (Rome), Ukraine (Odessa), Saudi Arabia and Russia (Moscow).
The presentation consisted of speeches in support by Kim Young-joo, former chairman of the Korea International Trade Association, concurrently chairman of the Government 2030 Busan Expo Bid Committee and speakers representing Busan and videos on the theme of 2030 Expo Busan and the introduction of the city.
Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Moon Sung-wook, Chairman Kim of the Government 2030 Busan Expo Bid Committee, Busan Mayor Park Hyeong-joon and Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee spoke in support. Korea focused the first competition presentation on the explaining of the meaning of the designation of themes of a Busan expo and better promoting the city to the BIE members.
The nation made the non-face-to-face presentation, an impressive and effective one by realizing VR technologies, using Korea¡¯s excellent IT capabilities.
President Moon Jae-in delivered a video message to express the Korean government¡¯s full support to attract 2030 Expo to Busan. ¡°South Korea is ready to usher in a sustainable future and share stories of solidarity, cooperation, inclusion and co-existence through the 2030 World Expo in Busan,¡± Moon said.
In his opening speech, Chairman Kim of the Government 2030 Busan Expo Bid Committee, said he gave a greeting of thanking for BIE¡¯s contribution to the international community.
Chairman Kim introduced 2030 Expo Busan, to become a breakthrough momentum amid the global crises such as the spread and continuity, technology divide and climate change, under the theme ¡°Transforming Our World Navigating Toward a Better Future, Trade Minister Yoo, the second speaker, suggested challenges and participation as goals of the 2030 World Expo Busan.
She pitched a Sustainable Living with Nature,¡± (planet), ¡°Technology for Humanity,¡± (prosperity) and ¡°Platform for Caring and Sharing¡± (people). Yoo expressed hope 2030 World Expo will be an expo in which everyone will participate through the overcoming of state, generation and physical distances.

Busan Mayor Park, the third speaker, discussed Busan¡¯s strengths and attractions as the optimal venue of 2030 World Expo under the theme ¡°Why Busan?¡±
Mayor Park spoke of strengths and attractions of the city. Park stressed that Busan is an optimal city for realizing the theme of transformation by pursuing a smart and open international city based on green and humanity.
He said the history of the growth of the city has reflected education, cooperation and innovation, core value of World Expo. Citing Busan¡¯s strengths, the mayor also said the city has a track record of having hosted abundant international events, and it has played roles such as K-content hub and a gate city of Northeast Asia.
MOTIE Minister Moon, the last speaker, stressed that Korea began to make changes for transformation. He explained national major policies, such as ¡°K-New Deal¡± and raising its nationally determined contribution (NDC) as state efforts to cope with industry, job, economy and general social changes, coupled with the 4th Industrial Revolution and climate change.
He proposed that 2030 World Expo will be an opportunity in which all human being around the globe can share the lessons on successes and failures, to be experienced toward the transformation.
He asked for support from BIE members, citing that Korea¡¯s representative companies and people¡¯s yearning for hosing the expo.
The government plans to accelerate efforts to implement its support tasks, recommended during the first meeting of 2030 World Expo Busan Bid Committee, convened by Prime Minister Kim boo-kyum on Nov. 19. It plans to ramp up activities to muster support from BIE member countries.
