KRC Ramps Up Safety of Agricultural Infrastructure Facilities

Korea Rural Community Corp. (KRC) said on Nov. 11 it will strengthen the safety management of agricultural infrastructure facilities by including small-sized reservoirs on a list of those which are required to undergo precision safety checks from next year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and KRC said the revision of the Act on the Overhauling of Agricultural and Fishing Villages calls for expanding the size of agricultural infrastructure facilities which are required to undergo precision safety checks from more than 300,000 cubic meters to 50,000 cubic meters.

The step will increase the number of agricultural infrastructure facilities which are required to undergo precision safety checks every five years from next year by 778 to 1,987.

The number of reservoirs subject to an emergency action plan (EAP) to minimize damage caused by earthquakes and other natural disasters will rise from 1,209, with a capacity of more than 300,000 cubic meters, to 1,387 with a capacity of more than 200,000 cubic meters.

An EAP is designed to make prior preparations so damage involving residents and properties caused by earthquakes and other natural disasters in the case of the collapse of reservoirs and other emergency case can be prevented effectively and minimized.

KRC plans to establish emergency anti-disaster response frameworks for areas expected to see damage. KRC President Kim said, ¡°The revision of the related act has laid foundation to ramp up prior response capabilities to cope with disasters of agricultural infrastructure facilities.¡±

KRC will do its utmost to ensure higher levels of safety management by ramping up in-house departments responsible for it so people can lead lives with no misgivings, even though the occurrence of disasters appears to be more frequent, he said.
