BIXPO 2021 New Technology Exhibition (BIXPO 2021) served as an opportunity to look into future technologies, such as those related to renewable energy efficiency and the future direction of new energy industries under the theme ¡°carbon neutrality.¡±

Two hundred and twenty-eight exhibitors from 36 countries showcased their latest products and technologies during BIXPO 2021, which took place at the Kim Daejung Convention Center in Gwangju from Nov. 10 to Nov. 12.

About 48,000 people have already registered their participation in the exhibition.

The exhibitors included utility & energy companies, companies with carbon-neutral technologies, offshore wind power technologies, experience centers of climate change and startups. The exhibition coincided with conferences.

BIXPO 2021, the seventh rendition, hosted by Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) is the nation¡¯s integrated energy exhibition.

KEPCO has hosted BIXPO as an opportunity for Korean and foreign companies and institutions to expand exchanges and collaboration to explore opportunities.

There were booths operated by KEPCO. One of them was ¡°Marketplace ENTER,¡± an open market for trading diverse products and service in the energy sector.

The open market allows suppliers to obtain data for developing new services and solicit customers and demand companies to be given procedures and means on how to implement energy projects and find their optimal partners.

KEPCO also displayed ¡°Power Check Mobile Service,¡± a solution designed to offer information on electricity safety and quality to electricity safety officials with super high-voltage power facilities via a smartphone app by analyzing big data of intelligent power meter systems.

A one-person household care service is available to detect abnormal situations by analyzing his or her electricity use, smartphone calls and location data.

It is able to alert emergency officials at administrative welfare centers. The service was created by the Gwangsan Ward Office in cooperation with SKT and Naver.

The new technology exhibition consisted of carbon neutrality, energy platform, power grid and startup sectors.

One of the exhibitors was Hyosung ITX, an IT unit of Hyosung Group, which showcased diverse energy solutions.

Among the exhibits were modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based-static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), produced by Hyosung Heavy Industries by utilizing the conventional high-voltage direct current transmission system technology.

In one corner of the new technology exhibition were startups pavilions to help startups attract investments, and help them commercialize products and services.

Sixty companies set up 40 booths to display their latest technologies and services of startups, in-house ventures, prospective business owners, Innopolis and energy technology markets.

KEPCO President Chung Hints at Need to Reconsider Nuclear Power to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

If a majority of the population wants to raise the portion of nuclear power in Korea¡¯s power generation portfolio, KEPCO President Chung Seung-il said that the carbon neutrality plan excluding nuclear power needs to be reconsidered.

He predicted that countries which can overcome the instability of renewable energies, such as photovoltaic power, wind power and hydrogen will have a hegemony over carbon neutrality.

President Chung made the remarks at a meeting with reporters on the sidelines of BIXPO 2021 on Nov. 10. ¡°If public consensus is on needing more nuclear power units, the government¡¯s carbon neutrality plan sans new nuclear power units need to be reconsidered.¡±

¡°Currently, there are 24 nuclear power units in operation, and the power generation portion of nuclear power in power cannot be not small, given that the figure will account for 24 percent in 2030,¡± he said.

¡°How nuclear power can be utilized needs to have scientific and rational discussions, not political strife. Nuclear power can play a part of realizing carbon neutrality, but the dark side of nuclear power is that issues such as the treating of spent nuclear fuel and other radwaste, the designating of new nuclear power plant sites and the construction of power transmission and distribution facilities cannot be ignored,¡± he said.
