LS Cable & System (LS C&S) has landed almost all orders to supply extra-high voltage submarine cables to a large-sized offshore wind power farm being built in Taiwan.

LS C&S, the photovoltaic power and wind power cable unit of LS Group, said on Oct. 6 it was selected as a preferred negotiator for a 200 billion won project to supply undersea cables to CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering Co. Ltd. (CDWE), Taiwan¡¯s first EPCI offshore wind power construction company, and it would supply submarine cables to the Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm until 2025.

In particular, LS C&S has carried out all six orders to supply extra-high marine cables for Taiwan¡¯s phase 2 offshore wind farm project, including the latest project.

The combined value of the six projects stands at 800 billion won. Taiwan plans to develop a combined 15GW offshore wind power farms by 2035 as part of efforts to expand renewable energies.

Given that a nuclear power unit is capable of generating about 1GW, developing offshore wind power farms with a combined capacity of 15Gw is a huge step.

The Hai Long Offshore Wind Farm is one of Taiwan¡¯s largest offshore wind farms. It is jointly developed by Northland Power Inc., Yushan Energy Pte Ltd and Mitsui & Co., with a total installed capacity of 1,044 MW. The project is 40-50 kilometers off the west coast of Taiwan. CDWE is the BoP (Balance of Plant) contractor.

LS C&S, predicting the value of additional submarine cable orders will surpass 1 trillion won, is devoting itself to landing additional cable orders.

The company also expects that its experience in Taiwan will serve as a stepping stone for expansion to the North American and Southeast Asian markets, where the offshore wind farm market is rapidly growing.

Myung Roe-Hyun, President and CEO of LS Cable & System, said, ¡°We will lead the domestic and foreign renewable energy business based on close cooperation with global wind power operators in Europe, North America, and Taiwan.¡±

LS Cable & System Secures Submarine Cable Laying Barge, Reinforcing Eco-Friendly Business

LS Cable & System will soon secure the largest submarine cable laying barge in Korea to reinforce its eco-friendly business.

LS Cable & System is planning to strengthen its position in the submarine cable business through the acquisition of its first submarine cable laying barge, the 8,000-ton GL2030, to proactively prepare for the rapidly growing offshore wind power generation projects being developed at home and abroad.

With the investment in GL2030, LS Cable & System will become the only company in Korea to have both a submarine cable plant and submarine cable laying barge.

Globally, there are only a handful of companies that can produce and lay extra-high voltage submarine cables in Europe.

¡°As there has been no submarine power cable laying barge in Korea, we have had difficulties adjusting the construction schedule and securing quality,¡± said a company official.

¡°If we operate a cable laying barge on our own, we will be able to accumulate know-how and enhance our construction expertise.¡±

GL2030 will be used first for domestic projects starting in the first half of 2022. As a submarine cable laying barge with the latest specifications equipped with a ¡®precision shop position control system,¡¯ GL2030 will raise the submarine cable laying competency of Korea to the next level.

Also, by owning the ship directly, LS Cable & System believes that it will be able to freely adjust its operation schedule, so that it will be better able to expand its participation in forthcoming submarine cable projects in East and Southeast Asian countries.

Myung Roe-Hyun, President & CEO of LS Cable & System, said, ¡°In line with the global spread of carbon-neutral policies, we are increasing our eco-friendly business, and continuously investing to secure our global competitiveness.¡±

LS Cable & System also announced its recent ESG management vision and its plan to invest KRW190 billion in its submarine cable plant in Donghae City.
