Korea Land & Housing Corp. (LH) has been in the limelight for its role of improving living conditions for the underprivileged and creating jobs for the elderly.

LH President Kim Hyun-joon struck an MOU on the expansion of housing support to persons of national merit with Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Hwang Ki-chul at LH Seoul Regional Headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in August.

Under the deal, the two institutions agreed to join forces to lend a helping hand to persons of national merit who have inadequate housing.

Both sides agreed to provide one-stop support, ranging from finding persons of national merit grappling with hard times to helping them find houses, and offering to cover moving costs to get them into public rental houses.

They agreed to launch a pilot special housing project targeting descendants of independence fighters.

LH has hired 18,000 elderly people, aged 60 or more, including persons of national merit, as senior employees, dubbed ¡°Rainbow Assistance Employees,¡± since 2010.

Rainbow Assistance Employees are charged with diverse life services, including care for the underprivileged and supporting the handicapped persons¡¯ activities at rental houses built by LH.

LH Implements 3 Housing Renewal Innovation District Projects

LH is taking follow-up steps after completing proposals to designate three out of candidate sites as housing renewal and innovation districts.

The Special Act on Reinvigorating Urban Renewal and Support went into effect on Sept. 21, laying institutional foundation for the implementation of housing renewal and innovation district projects.

Housing renewal and innovation district projects are designed to lay foundation for urban sustaining growth and expand housing supply by building multi-purpose centers such as life SOC with a focus on housing at run-down urban areas.

The pilot housing renewal and innovation district projects will be conducted in Seodun-dong, Suwon, Anyang 3-dong, Anyang City, and Eupnae-dong, Daejeon City.
