Jung-gu has become Seoul¡¯s first ward office to open a center to support the public sector¡¯s housing supply projects in accordance with the government¡¯s real estate steps.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced the plan to supply quality new houses in major cities with a focus on the Seoul metropolitan area by 2025.
Jung-gu Ward Office had prepared for the opening of the center to improve the deteriorated housing environment, introduce to residents the government¡¯s steps to supply new houses, and secure the momentum for residents¡¯ participation.
The center is situated on the first floor of Chungmu Art Center in the Shindang and Hwanghak area in which about 70 percent of the ward¡¯s population live, a step to ramp up communications with residents.
The functions of the center include the establishment of strategies tailored to meet the area¡¯s needs in conjunction with the government¡¯s real estate steps, prioritizing leading projects in neighborhoods of nearby subway stations and small-size housing refurbishment areas, and playing a part of communicating with residents for their approval of related projects, consulting and explaining.
Thanks to these efforts, the Shindang 5-dong area, south of Shindang Subway Station, was selected as a small-size housing refurbishment & management project site in April.
Recently, the Shindang 346 area was picked as an urban public sector multi-purpose project site.
Demand for the development of the Shindang 346 area was mounted after 2006, but it was halted due to restrictions on the development coupled with the Eungbong Neighborhood Park.
The enactment of the temporary special law has paved the way for improving the poor housing environment.
Mayor Seo Yang-ho said, ¡°The Jung-gu Housing Supply On-Site Support Center will work out response strategies through consultation with experts to propose projects tailored to meet the ward areas¡¯ pending issues.¡± Jung-gu will make efforts to explore opportunities to develop the ward area with residents¡¯ trust, he added.

The elderly who live alone and day laborers are also grappling with difficulties caused by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Against the backdrop, officials have been dispatched to make frequent health check-ups on the underprivileged and those with chronic diseases.
The ward office has supplied air-conditioners and other cooling devices to the basic livelihood guarantee beneficiaries and other low-income people, and 500 families who cannot afford to operate ACs will be given 200,000 won per household to subsidize their power charges.
