LG Energy Solution Supplies Innovative TR1300 to Massive Energy Storage Project in California
Moss Landing energy storage facility, replacing decommissioned old thermal power plant, has been developed by Vistra
LG Energy Solution officials show innovative batteries at InterBattery 2021, Korea¡¯s leading battery exhibition, on June 9.
LG Energy Solution has supplied its latest innovative Transportable Rack (TR1300) to the world¡¯s largest battery energy storage project in California, the Unites States.
LG Energy Solution completed adding the supply of TR1300 battery racks to Vistra¡¯s Moss Landing energy storage facility, with a 1.2GWh capacity connected to the power grid in northeastern Monterey County in California, the Korean company said on June 17.
The Moss Landing energy storage facility is the world¡¯s largest ESS power plant. The 300MW facility is capable of supplying electric power to 225,000 households at a peak demand time in the California area.
Vista is a leading integrated retail electricity and power generation company based in Irving, Texas.
It has a combined power capacity of 39GW in the United States, including natural gas, nuclear power and photovoltaic power.

The Moss Landing energy storage facility, replacing decommissioned old thermal power plant, has been developed by Vistra.
LG Energy Solution¡¯s latest innovative battery TR1300 was supplied in the project.
In the conventional method, battery packs and racks are shipped separately and assembled on-site. But this time the 22-pack TR1300s are pre-assembled at the factory before shipment to cut down construction time and related installation costs.
TR1300s have employed a high-performance energy cell and realized a double-stacked format to raise space efficiency and improve unit energy density. LG Energy Solution said the TR1300 meets the industry¡¯s most stringent fire safety standards.
The TR1300 rack has passed the testing of UL9540A (Standard for Safety Test Method for Evaluating Thermal Runway Fire Propagation in Battery Energy Storage Systems). It has been verified that a fire does not spread to adjacent battery racks.
The design of the rack also meets California¡¯s building codes in accordance with the American Society of Civil Engineers¡¯ ASCE 7-16, and TR1300 racks can be operated in a safe fashion even under outside environment changes, such as earthquakes.
Executive Vice President Shin Young-joon, head of LG Energy Solution¡¯s ESS Business, said, ¡°We¡¯ve been proved to have a differentiation ESS battery competitiveness by supplying batteries to the world¡¯s largest ESS project.¡± LG Energy Solution plans to lead the global ESS market by further ramping up quality competitiveness, he added.
The global market survey firm SNE Research reported that the size of the U.S. power grid ESS market stood at 6.5GWh in 2020, accounting for almost 50 percent of the global power grid ESS market.
SNE Research predicted that the global power grid ESS market with an annual average growth rate of 54 percent will jump to 55.3GWh by 2025, a nine-fold surge from current levels.
