HIRA Discloses Outcomes of Mapping Korean EDI Codes to SNOMED CTs
Step is expected to serve as an opportunity to unify a process of standardizing medical practices, which has been done divergently among several organizations

23(Wed), Jun, 2021

Excutive Director Kim Sun-min of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA).

Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA) has finished mapping 2,628 electronic data interchange (EDI) codes related to medical treatment and operation fee segments to Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CTs).

EDI codes are a means of widespread communications for medical fee claims, scrutiny and reimbursement in Korea. SNOMED CTs are international medical terms for systematized computing treatment.

HIRA¡¯s mapping of EDI codes into SNOMED CTs is designed to secure interoperability between Korean medical practice terms with international standard systems and raise the utilization of big data related to health and medical care.

Mapping outcomes are used to produce data based on clinical tests by applying them on the building of standardized data sets, which allow research on international comparison, health and medical care.

Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA) offered an educational program for countries of Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LAC) on Value Based Purchasing Systems for Health Services.

A report on the outcomes of the mapping can be confirmed on HIRA¡¯s health/medical care big data opening system (opendata.hira.or.kr). a booklet on it will be produced and distributed to related organizations.

An Excel file on the report will be offered so users can be allowed to search for it, and a search function will be added to the website.

An opinion collection window will be operated to update the outcomes of the mapping and help HIRA spearhead medical term standardization by continuously expanding the scope of standardization.

Park Han-joon, head of the Big Data Office at HIRA, said, ¡°Divulging outcomes of the mapping is expected to serve as an opportunity to unify a process of standardizing medical practices, which has been done divergently among several organizations.¡±

Han called for much concern and support to evolve matching EDI codes related to medical treatment and operation fees into SNOMED CTs into a greatly acceptable table.
