Korea District Heating Corp. (KDHC) announced a plan on May 7 to implement a biogas to hydrogen (B2H) project using biogas from the treatment of food waste to reinvigorate the hydrogen economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The B2H project is a new eco-friendly business model involving the use of methane from the purification of biomass as fuel cell to generate electricity and use carbon captured by membrane gas separators.

In particular, the business model utilizes biogas produced from not only food waste, but also waste water sludge and livestock excrement.

KDHC has teamed up with AIRRANE to make joint R&D efforts and obtain a related patent for three years to develop the B2H business project. AIRRANE is a leading pioneer of innovative membrane solution technology for gas separation.

KDHC established a mid- to long-term partnership by signing an MOU on the B2H pilot project with AIRRANE on May 4.

Korea District Heating Corp. (KDHC) and AIRRANE agreed on May 7 to make a joint R&D and obtain a related patent for three years to develop the B2H business project.

Under the deal, KDHC plans to spread the B2H business model, a combination of waste treatment and renewable energy technology, to local governments across the nation down the road.

The B2H project the corporation is implementing is an innovative business model designed to treat food waste, which will evolve into diverse convergence projects for the ¡°Green New Deal¡± such as the use of hydrogen based on biogas, the use of carbon capture, liquefied carbon and the production of renewable energies, said the head of KDHC¡¯s New Growth Division.

The project is expected to establish itself as a success story to implement the government¡¯s policies on the Green New Deal by solving problems of treating food waste, waste-water sludge and livestock excrements facing each local government and being an exemplary option of reutilizing energies, he added.

KDHC is conducting an on-line contribution campaign under the theme ¡°Carbon Neutrality Story Zero.¡±

KDHC¡¯s ¡®Carbon Neutrality Story Zero¡¯ Campaign with People

KDHC is conducting a one month on-line contribution campaign under the theme ¡°Carbon Neutrality Story Zero¡± until June 13.

The campaign, marking the six edition this year, is designed to publicize the government¡¯s 2050 carbon neutrality initiative, Korean New Deal and KDHC¡¯s grand plan related to the Green New Deal and its efforts to spur the community energies.

The drive consists of three missions: survival strategies and carbon neutrality in an era of climate change, KDHC¡¯s plans and KDHC¡¯s business models related to carbon neutrality.

The campaign is taking a format of participants¡¯ hands-on on-line contributions via Naver¡¯s on-line contribution portal ¡°Happybean¡± (happybean.naver.com).

If each participating volunteer pulls off each mission, he or she will be given one bean – up to four beans and deposit into a box a contribution of 1,500 won per bean.

About 8 million won, to be contributed to the Happybean contribution box, will be used for supporting the underprivileged via social welfare bodies in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Daegu.

KDHC President Hwang Chang-hwa said, ¡°Solving environmental issues such as global warming and climate change have become an essential topic of the times, and this drive is hoped to serve as an opportunity to make the general public¡¯s pledge to committing carbon neutrality.¡±
