Kwon Yong-bok, the former deputy minister in charge of aviation policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), took office as the 17th president of Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) on Feb. 2.
New TS President Kwon is well versed in the transportation industry, including the road, railroad and aviation fields. He has held major posts such as director in charge of railroad policy, director general of the Logistics Policy Bureau and deputy minister of the Aviation Policy Office at the MOLIT.
Kwon passed the 33rd higher administrative examination in 1989. In his inaugural speech, he said, ¡°I will prioritize in protecting people¡¯s life and safety from traffic accidents.¡±
Kwon said he will fulfill his responsibilities with a mindset in which a moment¡¯s inattention or compromise cannot be allowed when it comes to safety.
He said TS will concentrate its capabilities on technology development and institutional reform to reinvigorate the self-driving car and drone businesses, which are core part of Korean New Deal policies.

TS Teams Up with Hyundai and Kia to Jointly Develop Next-Generation DTG
TS signed an MOU on the joint development of a next-generation digital tachograph (DTG) with Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors.
Kwon Oh-ryung, head of Hyundai Motor/Kia Motors Mobility Platform Business Office, and Cho Kyung-soo, chief of TS¡¯ Transportation Safety Division, participated in a signing ceremony.
DTG is a device fitted to a vehicle that automatically records the operation of the car such as speed, distance and the situation of a traffic accident.
Under the deal, Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and TS will jointly develop a next-generation DTG whose functions and scalability will be enhanced and spread it.
Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors will be responsible for developing a next-generation DTGB and additional services utilizing traffic big data while TS will be charged with providing infrastructure such as the establishing of standards for a terminal and revision of regulations related to DTG.
